Books I Didn't Think I'd Read

Postby geonuc » Sun Jun 09, 2013 12:09 pm

I was browsing a small, independent bookstore a while back, and as is my wont, I felt compelled to buy something even though I was just killing time until a movie theater opened. So I bought this book, which is totally not one of my usual genres:

Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson

It's about a young girl who experiences a traumatic event the summer before entering high school as a freshman (freshgirl?). The event and how she handled it cause her to be ostracized, which is obviously traumatic in of itself at that age. But the girl is very intelligent and perceptive, and Anderson's writing style is very readable, so the book had no trouble keeping my interest, even though there was a complete dearth of vampires, normally a requirement for me.

I know there's a lot of books out there that are outside my usual spectrum of interest that I'd enjoy reading. This was one of them.
