At one time sailors were renown for being able to curse in multiple languages while discoursing upon the fact that you were not the biological get of your paternal parent. That your maternal parent regretted not smothering you in your crib. That your siblings didn't sell you into slavery because the slavers wanted them to pay for taking you. And the family dog pretended you were a bone and tried to bury you in the backyard.

And then when they were warmed up they really laid into you.

i had my suspicions, ikyoto.

fisher, that was lovely. almost poetic. i thought that you were in the army. am i mistaken? if not, how do you come to know so much about the habits of sailors? and is that why you went to the army and not the navy? (i don't mean to pry so please excuse me if those questions are too personal.) you have provided a nice outline but i so would like to be able to read a real example. do you happen to have an example?

I have no idea.... I am the child of a sailor, and I can swear in 5 languages.... I had to quit swearing in Spanish when the kids friends started translating... so I switched to German and Swedish... Italian and French are too close to Spanish...

Just saying...

Daddy was Navy, Mommy was Air Force, I married into the Army not once, not twice, but THREE times, and I joined the Army.... so did Squirrely... she also married into the Army, joined the Army and then married a Marine.... we aren’t sure of him.... It’s like a disease in our family....

1. you're a rebel (navy father, air force mother and you drawn to the army)
2. some find a person in uniform irresistable
3. you sound good. the back's better?

Okay, WTF is this? This guy is the President's response coordinator for the Ebola outbreak:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Klain

He is a lawyer. And a former lobbyist for Fannie Mae. Who helped them overcome "regulatory issues." He has zero background in dealing with public health emergencies.

I don't know about you, but this sure looks like cronyism to me. I mean... God damn.

Exactly, and that is the expertise needed. There are plenty of people at the CDC and other places who possess the expertise related to public health emergencies. I happen to know one, in fact. An ex-neighbor. She travels to places to coordinate and supervise CDC activities. But what she doesn't do, and really can't do, is engage other government agencies to more effectively manage a situation. That's not her gig.

Cronyism is a word you might want to take another look at, GJ. Yes, Obama selected a person politically aligned to him. So what? If you were president, who would you choose if you needed someone relatively quickly? Someone you knew little about? Someone you didn't know if you could trust who might take the opportunity to politicize the response against you? No.

It's a little like accusations of playing favorites with your friends. Well, yeah. 'Friends' have already been vetted. If I were president, most of my freakin' staff would be my friends. I choose my friends because of who they are.

What geonuc said. I'll also add that cronyism more often involves picking people as leverage, not because they're friends.

Sorry, I did some epic conclusion jumping there.

Edit: what I meant though re cronyism, is that this guy is a former lobbyist. Lobbyists do stuff that, in some countries, would be considered bribery. Maybe the word I used is incorrect, but I still feel like there's some conflict of interest, I guess?

I found this article encouraging. In short, some well-intentioned grandmother took two girls from Guinea on a 3 day journey to Mali to flee ebola, but a 5 year old was already infected and died. And now it looks like they acted quickly enough there that no one else caught it. I am partly posting this here now because I remember some of y'all worrying it was going to become epidemic in Mali some months ago.

Latest is also that the American doctor in NYC is being released so there are no more cases in the USA, and it's stable in Guinea, declining in Liberia, and increasing in Sierra Leone.
Yes, I have a life. It's quite different from yours.

I almost did, but was saved when a vampire visited me on my death bed. So, not dead from ebola but now undead. Should be cool - looking forward to the benefits.

I guess that's better than getting bit by a zombie. I hear that's quite popular these days.
