It was -16 this time yesterday. It's 16 today. That's like a difference from 50 to 80! It will get up to the high 30s today but then it plunges ag again, -20 Monday morning.

Meanwhile, in Europe this is perhaps the most mild winter on record.

Seriously not complaining on my end, just wary about what sort of rest of the year we'll have to pay for this. :?

My boss keeps pulling the "so much for global warming" line on me... he thinks he's funny and I think he likes to rile me.

I should send him today's xkcd

And 2013 (and probably 2014) will go down as the warmest years in recorded history, even with these cold snaps.

And even this month globally will end up warmer than average.

Global? What's that? Does it really matter that them Ozzies are hot? My heating bill is going through the roof!

This is rapidly losing its humor...

The Polar Vortex is coming again...
Temps here in Dayton are expected in the -10F to -15F range...

...but in Alaska...
It's a bloody heat wave!!!

Had a glorious Saturday shoveling my walks, plowing my drive, feeding the birds and deer. So much fun that I drove over to the in-laws and did theirs. Then brought them home for a fancy dinner. I was outside from about 10:00am-6:00pm. Then yesterday, during a break in The Kid's Vball tourney, I got an hour walk in the metro park across the street. We'd gotten about 6 inches Sat, then a fresh 2 early that morning, so I was trudging through about a foot of snow on some of the nature trails that they don't plow. Surprising hard work. Temps dropping from the 30's down to -15 or so. PPi, that's a 45 degress swing in less than 36 hours. It was so prett last night after the clouds blew off: Crystal clear, and peaceful...

We went hiking both days this weekend and yes, hiking even in 4 inches of fluffy snow is a lot of work. We were only out for about 20 minutes on Sunday.

We had an over 50 degree change a week ago...it was almost 40, then down to -15, in about the same timeframe.

First "snow day" at school that directly effects me today! It's the fourth day that most schools around the state are closed. It's the first one at the University. My class was supposed to start tonight, but it's cancelled! Classes officially began last week, but on Tuesday after the MLK holiday, so this class (once a week) was already a week behind the rest.
It's going to be colder tomorrow morning, but the winds will be less intense and will die down by the afternoon, so we'll see if schools are closed again tomorrow.

The University itself is not closed, so I'm still at work.

Noticed last nite out at the station that it was 38 degrees just after sundown. By 3 ayem when I left, it was 18.
Right now it's 5, and they're saying it'll be -15 in the morning. If I have to go to school tomorrow, I'm afraid of when
I try to start the car -- that all I hear is a little voice coming from the speakers saying "...no effing way...".

BTW -- even the low temps for Barrow, Alaska for the next week are higher than we are here in Dayton right now...
...there's something fundamentally wrong with this equation...

EDITED TO ADD:
the word just came out. It's 4:30 pm Monday -- campus is closing at 5pm today, and will be closed all day Tuesday because of the weather.
Well, I'll be up and around at about noon tuesday...we'll see if the car starts, and make sure Mom's house is OK, and if the car warms up,
go out to the station and play...still got homework etc due, so I gotta get to a computer somewhere...see yas after the spring thaw...

-15 out my window this morning. Officially -17 in the little burg up the road. That is the coldest I've ever been in Ohio. Nothing compared to my North Dakota days but it's been a long time since I've been out in double digit negative cold.
Here at my desk this morning. Everything else is closed: schools, businesses. Starting to get a little concerned about the level of propane in my tank and the lack of communication from the propane delivery company, though.

Well, looks like I'm stuck at home today and maybe a few days. The roads are ice and I can't even make it out of my neighborhood. It's 15F right now with a high of 35 expected, then back into the teens. I think I'm going to be here a while.

Why, back in my day, we had to trudge five miles through snow drifts ten feet high to get to school. No, wait, that was a movie I saw. I went to school in Miami Beach and Honolulu.

Never mind.

Wow, I just tuned in to the local news reports. The interstates around here are starting to move slowly but there's thousands of abandoned cars. In some places it's like those movies where technology fails. Or the Walking Dead, except without zombies.

Yesterday as I had to drop MrPi off at work. It was -4000F so it was icy and slow going. As we were going down one stretch of highway that has a string of bridges, I left ample space between me and the car in front of me. MrPi said "people will pull in front of you if you leave that much room." I told him it's safer that way. A little bit down the road I had to stop a little short, and skidded. Fortunately I was still going slow and didn't spin at all. But if I had been closer to the car in front of me, I might have hit it. I told MrPi that's why I leave that much room.

We had passed a warning sign that there was a crash ahead, but on a ramp the direction we weren't heading.

When I checked the news later, I found out that the crash was a car that had skidded off the road, and the driver died. The news reports stated that that stretch of road was strict ice.

I shared that article with MrPi. He said, "You are right to drive a bit more defensively."

I am all for staying off the roads in conditions like these. Even when it's not actively snowing. We've gotten to a point where there are way too many cars on the road, with whatever ridiculous statistic of driver-only cars on the commute. We need to change our way of thinking and encourage people to consider whether their job is critical, or if they are better off staying off the roads so that essential staff have an easier drive in.

Good lord! My sister has a close acquaintance in Atlanta. They've been trying to get home (Marietta) from Atlanta since yesterday noon. And they haven't made it yet! Abandonned vehicles everywhere. They're keeping Home Depots open as shelters. Police going to schools to watch kids that couldn't get home, kids stuck on busses. Kids that made it home but their parents didn't.

Man we are so doomed. Keep warm and safe Geo.

From what I've seen on the news, you are better off, than stuck on the roads. I'd rather have -5F in Cleveland than 15F (or even 32F) in Atlanta.

When your snot freezes, your skin burns, and it hurts to breath, it feels that cold!
If it weren't for an outlier of a day a couple weeks ago when it got up to 40, the average temp for the whole month of January would probably be in the minuses.

I might be weird (OK, I am weird), but I find the sensation of ice forming on your mustache as the moisture in your exhaled breath freezes out on it, to be kind of interesting. I had that Sunday when we went hiking in balmy +15F weather.

I suspect pp is not directly familiar with that sensation, lacking the mustache.

The last couple of days it has been around -10F overnight (air temp, -30F with the windchill) and around +5F for highs. Today it supposed to reach 15F and 30F by Friday. Break out the shorts.

At least it will suppress the mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas.
