SciFiFisher wrote:There is a safe way to conceal carry. There is no way to prevent stupidity. The safe way to conceal carry involves using a holster designed for the purpose, keeping the weapon on safe, and never having "one in the chamber". Yes, this does prevent you from shooting yourself in the nuts (or other personal parts) and prevents you from winning the fast draw contest. :o

The good news is that if you remain situationly aware and practice a couple of times a year you really can get the weapon out safely and deal with that crazed mouse that just dared you to face him down.

This works oh so well with a revolver and they just happen to be popular as a concealed carry pistol.
Though I must admit, the revolver is pretty damned safe due to the requirement to pull the hammer back.

My issue is with the idea that people with a concealed carry weapon hide the fact that at any given time in the day, their weapon has been pointed at someone.
Now, if I pointed an unloaded firearm at random people in the street, what would the NRA say, what would experienced shooters say?
yep, that's right. They would call me irresponsible, breaking the rules of firearms safety etc etc etc.
I would be scum, mud and everything in between and called a bad example to the shooting community.
Yet, every day in every way, someone in the USA gets a concealed hand gun pointed at them, their spouses, their children.
And this is ok, because it's hidden.
So a thin piece of fabric is the magic that makes guns safe according to the NRA and everyone else that thinks this is ok.

Ah yes, the universal truth. Officers must be supervised at all times lest they get everyone into deep doo doo. :P

This is why the american military perfected the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO). The best nannies in the world. ;)

So, US Military Commisioned Officers are a living example of the Dilbert Principle

Or maybe worse. For example, they take someone fresh out of high school and put them through 4 years of college. The lucky ones actually get to go to a military academy. ;)

Then armed with some drill and ceremony and a lot of book learning they pin on the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. At that point they are deluded enough to think they know how their respective military works and that they are a junior McArthur just waiting to pin General on. And they can't understand why thier service doesn't just skip the formalities and making them wait almost 20 years to do it.

Then they get assigned to thier first real unit and it dawns on them that there are about 15,000 things that they didn't learn in the academy. And the shock really sets it when they realize that they barely get the same respect a boot private gets in some cases.

The smart ones find a good officer to use as a mentor and the lucky ones get a good NCO who takes them under thier wing and starts teaching them practical leadership skills.

The rest pretty much conform to the dilbert book of leadership and management.

Therefore all movies and TV shows that depict the US Military ALWAYS HAVE to have an incompetent platoon lieutenant who is handled by the Crusty 20 year Veteran Sargent..... :P (except for JAG, on JAG, everyone is smart, patriotic, good looking and wonderful and it shows the US Military to be the best organization on this side of the Orion Arm and no Private Military Service Contractors either)

et tu, sigma? you're picking bananas, digging a pool and then cleaning brite's cabana. does this mean that you've decided not to accept the post of special assistant to the president of cascadia analytics ltd? a post that does not require digging a pool as there already is one on site? a post that would not require you to share a couch with several dogs but would provide you with a private suite? were you planning on telling the cascadia staff at any particular time or were you just going to leave them in suspense?

Sigma_Orionis wrote:From what I can see about that firing range's web site it's more like a tourist attraction than a place to learn how to shoot.
Not that it makes any difference of course. Why in hell I'd have 9 year old firing an automatic weapon is beyond me.

Me'n'little brother went to a range in Pahoenix where they rented full autos so we could have a little male bonding. Granted, we were both well over 40 at the time...and the weapon came with its own armed range master who did the loading, gave instruction, and was very prepared to ventilate you (he was carrying a 45) if you even looked like you were going to go postal.
We each let loose a 50-round drum out of a tommy gun...wow...felt like a steam locomotive on my shoulder with that bolt slamming back and forth...
That was definitely one crossed off the bucket list.

of all the things to quibble about, sigma! you don't have to carry him and he doesn't have to carry you. btw i didn't see a veil in that picture.

That's exactly the point, no veil, but one's carrying another, and there's this thing about the silly fireman hat. When I was a a Kid I wanted to be an astronaut not a Fireman, it's the principle of the whole thing.

sigma, may i remind you that you were the one who posted that link. pictures of men in veils are available. just google. as for the fireman's hat, one of the characters in the film is a fireman. ergo ...

for your wedding, feel free to wear a veil, astronaut's helmet or anything else that strikes your fancy. it's your wedding after all. as for who will carry whom over the threshold, if any carrying is to be done, you and your intended can settle that privately.
