This brings up my collection of textbooks autographed by their respective authors to four. Think that might be a geeky collection to have? :ugeek:

No.
At least one of them is Griffiths, right? You got to host him for a lecture? I got rid of most of my physics texts but saved his E&M and quantum. I'd love to meet him.

He's actually in town for a symposium tomorrow- which is the reason Barbara Ryden is too.

I'm guessing the fanboys will be out in force, but it'd be kinda neat to say hi to Griffiths again if he's in town!

Third book btw I got signed is by Shankar, grad quantum mechanics. I don't really have many other old books by this point so guess that collection'll have to do for now.

Got word from one side of the family today that not only do I have a new little cousin in the world (ie cousin had her second child), one cousin got engaged!

Two of three cousins in that family with major life events today, the third is graduating with her M.Sc. in a week or so with a job lined up. I've got me a mighty proud aunt and uncle.

welcome to the jungle... on Sumatra next door a big volcano has been erupting almost continuously since the weekend.

Mount Sinabung is just South of a very large crater lake (Lake Toba) resulting from a massive volcanic explosion 70,000 years ago and she recently woke up big time. 20,000 people have been evacuated and yesterday i saw almost continuous pyroclastic flows coming down the sides.

There's a webcam pointing at it and if wind permits (as well as timing), you can see some awesome sights in near real time.

GJ beat me to the punch. Glad to know you aren't too close, and I'm assuming you have an exit strategy if "too close" changes. Don't want anything happening to my god son or his parents.

it's a normal size volcano, no chance of it doing a Toba, and it's smack in the middle of Sumatra, so too far away from the sea to do a Krakatoa.

we're good.

:cheer:

I just read these and saw the webcam pic and thought it was from your webcam and nearly shit myself!
500km is away is good. Much happier now.

i am very tempted to go and have a look, but the area is rather off the beaten track. Not to mention geologically unsafe at the moment.

pretty sure Mrs M. would have some choice words to say if I would indicate any intention to go there.
