The Weather Thread

When the sky is clear (which it hasn't been these past couple of days) I've noticed Venus blazing away as I walked out to get the paper. So Jupiter is hanging around as well? Sometimes I think I really need to complete the telescope project I started about a hundred years ago.

I think there's an app for your phone that tells you what everything in the sky is. No need for a scope, or astronomy education. :P

But, but ... I want to see Jupiter's moons again! I had a telescope years ago but I gave away to a needy person who would use it more than I did.

I saw Venus on Sunday morning when grabbing my flight from Seattle back home (and I assumed Jupiter too because what else would be so bright). I always feel like I feel a little better when I have to wake up for a 6am flight if I see Venus as part of the deal. :)

They're predicting a high of 7F on Sunday here. Brrr! We are inviting friends over on Sunday afternoon for board games because hell if I'm going outside. ;) Well unless it's clear for the lunar eclipse that night, as some friends want to gather on a rooftop bar to watch it.

I don't think there's a chance in he|| we'll be able to see the eclipse. And it currently shows us going down to -7F Sunday.

The big tease. We were supposed to get a whopper of a snowstorm tomorrow. Downgraded to maybe an inch or two, freezing drizzle, ice. We lost most of what we had on the ground to several hours of rain yesterday. The big story is the big chill starting Sunday. Despite the lack of a good snow, temps are still supposed to plummet. Now predicted to go down to -9. That's a big drop. So the ice will stay for a couple days. But by Tuesday back up to 40 and rain. Sigh.

Well, that will be a little more cumbersome than getting to the parking lot of the lodge.

Well, it rained all Saturday. Finally temps started dropping around 10:00pm. Woke up to -5 and 4-6 inches of snow after most of the existing snow had melted away. I spent the whole day outside plowing, shoveling and feeding the birds. Plowed my neighbor's drive as they're out of town and his Dad was going to check on the place from time to time. I got hot, I got cold, I got hot again, I got tired. Mrs. T made a nice dinner and then I passed out.

Yesterday's forecast was that we'd get 2-4" over the course of two days. Now it's down to less than an inch. The "storms" have either broken up or passed north or south of us, like they have all winter. We have nothing on the ground. It was so strange, we got a few 4" snowfalls in early November, before we had a chance to bag our leaves. Now all we see when we look outside are the leaf piles.

We got a few inches this weekend, but it's supposed to rain tomorrow so it'll all melt. What a shame.

Main thing here is wow it was cold this weekend. Didn't crack the double digits in Farenheit at all. Today it was like 14F when I was walking in and it felt positively balmy, what with my actually getting a little warm under my jacket and all!

So how about this weekend bf and I are heading up to Algonquin Provincial Park (a few hours north of us), and in these temperatures we are doing a thing where we're dog sledding and spending one night winter camping in the wilderness. I've wanted to do this for awhile, and figured if it doesn't happen this winter it's not gonna happen. :) But man, I'm nervous about the cold- they are allegedly tents with wood stoves, and we are renting sleeping bags rated cold enough etc, but still I hope it'll be a good experience. And if it's one crappy night, well one night isn't too bad and will sure as hell make us appreciate how warm our condo is for the rest of winter!

It's raining here too. So hard that the random leak in the hallway outside my office that showed up yesterday suddenly became a torrent. :?

I'm surprised at how quickly they've come around to clean it up and fix it once it became an actual problem of raining inside!

Yeah, did you ever watch that show on Discovery Channel about how civilization would collapse if humans are gone? And how buildings collapse if abandoned? Whenever something like this happens I always think about how this is the way it begins!

I have watched a couple of episodes of that show. It's very fascinating. I wonder if pugs would evolve in to pug wolves. :P

Rain all day and last night along with 50 degree temps to melt all the snow. I could hear the whitewater in my back creek. My sump pump cycled every minute while I tried to get to sleep last night. Woke up to 30 and snow this morning. Snowing hard when as I was on my 3rd $hitty commute in a row. Temps going back down into the teens and then single digits with snow showers expected today and Saturday. This is truly WTF weather.

Sorry, we're sending that cold air to you!

Next week our lows may get in the -30s. If so that might be the coldest I've experienced here in 12 years. At least I have an excuse for not going outside for very long!
