The Weather Thread

Yeah, here it says it's currently 4F. We honestly hit that a few times a year as a morning temp, so everything is open, and my only adaptation to it is pulling on snow pants in addition to my jacket for the walk to work. I don't think we are getting as cold as some other places will though, this is just normal cold here.

Interestingly I learned that the Toronto public schools basically never shut down, ever, but when it gets as cold as this the buses stop running. The reason is the city recognizes that many families can't rearrange child care on a whim. So, apparently they're open, but everyone knows nothing important will be covered if you can't make it in. My friend who lived across from school who explained this to me was always annoyed she had to go even if half the class didn't!

It is still -20F at noon! It's supposed to get "up" to -14 before it plunges again.

Just found out my neighbor up front is stuck in Markdale ON north of Toronto. There's 2 feet of blowing and drifting snow there making it difficult to get back to the Toronto airport. Says all the flights are cancelled anyway. I told him he should enjoy it there. It's currently one degree warmer there than here. :P

I'll be in California in 3 days, no need to hate. :P It was actually colder this morning than last, but the winds have died down, so it hasn't been bad. The dog and I were out last night for over half an hour. Only my fingers got cold. Snow tonight, snow and drizzle tomorrow. 4-5 inches will paralyze the city tomorrow. All schools have been closed including the universities. Can't imagine they'll open the public schools tomorrow. Looking forward to some pretty winter weather tomorrow, but it goes up to the 50's by Sunday, rain all next week.

As the Mercury is on the upswing, but still at -23, I saw the forecast for Sunday as "44 and patchy drizzle" and said blech.

The problem is, the bare bit of snow we have will melt again, and we're actually going double digits subzero again next week. So once again, bitter cold with no snow. Blech.

All I'm saying guys is the past week of weather is really nudging things in Texas's direction. :P

We are in our single digits here but it's amazing how by next Monday/Tuesday it's literally going to be 40 degrees warmer.

Cool! (Pun intended.)

We can see Lake Ontario in the distance from our apartment, and it's really fascinating to watch it when the mist is rising off of the water. It's definitely happened several times since this winter started. Even freakier is when it's clear here but there's a giant cloud bank halfway across, so you know it's snowing in New York!

Ahh, the polar plunge is over. I can really feel the difference between -4 & -27 inside the house.

Heatwave, went up to 15. 10 this morning. Got the 2-4, or 3-5, or 4-6 that everyone has been talking about but it seems still surprised everyone. I've never heard ODOT so viciously and brutally savaged on the radio in my 33 years. My 28 minute commute took and hour and fifteen, and I started at 5:30. I called Mrs. T and told her under no circumstances should she subject herself to that kind of annoyance. Stay home today. Every school is closed.

So I don't think I mentioned it yet, but the most annoying thing by far to me in all of this is the heat in our building sucks. It was fine the last two winters, even at the coldest points, but something gave up the ghost and now I'm sitting in my office with my coat and hat on, really annoyed by it all.

They're scheduled to tear this building down in the next year or two, mind, so it's not gonna really get fixed before I leave.

The last two days here were positively springlike. Today though, ugh! Woke up at 26F to see sleet, and it's now ~30F and the freezing rain is going strong. University did the super rare move of canceling everything from 3pm on, because it's such a mess. Definitely the sort of day where you look out and think one giant "nope" and work from home if you can!

Luckily I basically chose this apartment for just this kind of weather- safe and snug, able to walk to the grocery store via underground tunnel, and even has a gym to make up for the fact that I can't make it to my Wednesday archery class on campus. Canadian living at its finest! No one tells you before you move here that Canadians are actually mole people! :P

It's a crisp -12C here in Bend. Lot of ice around from the snow we received the past week. Walk like a penguin.

Ugh, snowstorms. We're in the middle of one now. It was supposed to be about 3-5" through the day but we already have at least 6" and it's still coming. I like the snow, just not the timing. MrPi has to get the kids before getting me, on treacherous roads. It would take him about a half hour to get here without bad conditions, but I bet it won't be under an hour! I am going to be waiting nervously, because if he gets stuck or in an accident, I can't go get the kids......ugh.

More rain this week-end. It's working nicely with my plan to NOT do yard work.

What makes it perfect is we have not had rain all week during the work week. But, every Friday for the last three weeks it has started raining on Friday and keeps it up throughout the week-end. I really don't mind, but I have a few limbs that came down during a really gusty day we had about 3 weeks ago that I need to get in the Green Waste bin. And I refuse to do it while it is raining.

The Pacific NW is getting hit by a 'major' snowstorm. Reports from Portland say the grocery stores have been mobbed and there's no longer any kale to be had.

Here, in Bend, yeah, there's quite a bit of snow on the ground this morning and more forecast all week. Bendites are ecstatic because they're crazy.
