There are people here (and where I grew up in Michigan) who wear shorts no matter the weather. They tend to be gentlemen of a particular girth and stature.

It turns out Texas is like Florida in that everyone apologizes to you for slightly inconvenient weather as if they are personally responsible. Yesterday was in the fifties but sunny, and today has light rain of the "don't quite need an umbrella" variety, and I swear every person I've been introduced to so far has personally apologized about the weather.

Maybe it's a form of passive-aggressive bragging. If you reply It's not bad at all compared to the snow and cold I came from, that reveals that you consider them superior in the weather category!

They were apologizing in San Diego.

Well, I was going to drive over the pass to Portland tomorrow to take in the golf show at the convention center. But with the forecast calling for tons of snow on this side and constant rain on that side, I think I'll pass on driving the pass.

We are getting warnings: starting Monday through Thursday we can expect flooding and heavy rains in the Sacramento Valley area. Not an immediate threat for me is the potential mudslides in the areas devastated by the fires and drought.

As it turned out, the weather was wet but I could have driven to Portland without dying too much.

We went from 50 something and really wet, to really windy, and now temps in the 20's. It's still windy. I can't believe I didn't lose power at the house. Looks like we lost power here at work over the weekend. None of my overnight processes ran. Behind and trying to catch up on a Monday: Business as usual.

Geez, there's like a foot of snow out there now.

With 100% chance forecast for today and continuing for three days. Gah. I'll never get to play golf this year.

Have you thought about switching to ice climbing, or snowmobiling?

I'm thinking about moving to Hawaii.

We're getting enough snow that Bend, which is a snow-sports destination, seems a bit overwhelmed. And there are reports of avalanches on the highway passes to Portland.

I'm starting to wonder how well the roof was designed for snow load.

Somewhat related to that. I saw a special about thesnow sheds on the tracks they had to build in the Sierra Nevada mountains for the trains. Apparently, the snow is especially dense due to high moisture content and they used the sheds as a way to keep the snow off the tracks. They were used extensively to protect workers and trains when they were building the transcontinental rail line.

It does snow a lot in the Sierra Nevada for the same reason the Cascades get a lot of snow.

Apparently Bend had a record February [24-hour] snowfall today: 12.5 inches. Previous high was 4 inches.

For whatever reason, that seems remarkably low. I know Bend is on the leeward side. But heck, we had 26 inches in 24 hours here once. 12 inches in 30 days seems like nothing. Certainly not for ski country.

It does seem low but only because I forgot a key phrase: '24-hour'. This was a record for snowfall in a 24-hour period.

Oops.
