Thanks, folks! Happy Thanksgiving, Parrot. And, what is it? Columbus Day in the US? Happy that!

If this country had any shame, Columbus Day would be a national day of mourning.
Edit: and really, so would Thanksgiving.
[/deadly serious]
Anyway enjoy the turkey.

Luckily, Canadian Thanksgiving doesn't really have those overtones. No Pilgrims, nothing to do with natives. It's just a harvest festival. We have our own appalling colonial history with natives, but Thanksgiving isn't tied up with that, as far as I'm aware, except for cultural spill-over from US Thanksgiving due to the two holidays having the same name.

Just do what I do. Whenever I'm not with family, FZ cooks up a turkey and we watch
Last of the Mohicans.

Oh, yeah, happy Canadian harvest day! Personally, I think we should just celebrate the pagan sabbats, even if you're not pagan. Makes more sense than what we do with American religious holidays.

That's because Pagan sabbats are a lot more fun....

That works for the individual, the city, and for the state government represented by the term "Columbus".

I'll try not to take it personally.

Of course it doesn't apply to you. I was just being funny.
Actually, the only ones it really applies to is the State Legislature. I don't even particularly hate the Gov, though I don't love him either. I have nothing against the city of Columbus. And I don't hate the explorer Columbus and frankly don't understand why people get so bent about him. But I also don't understand the point of the holiday or the parades.

Hey! what's wrong with Chris Columbus? he made landfall in Venezuela in his third voyage, don't you dare criticize my precious!
(Actually, up till 15 years ago, October 12th was known officially as "the day of the race", nowadays it's known as "The Day of Indigenous Resistance")

Happy belated Thanksgiving tsc.
It was a good weekend, I was busy preparing mostly Saturday. Baked an apple/pear/cranberry crisp, made the cranberry sauce and got the sauerkraut made. Sunday, made and then enjoyed the rest of the meal with family. Monday was spent cleaning. The leftovers are just about gone.
Happy belated Columbus Day, to those that had that holiday.
Cheers!

Sauerkraut? Is that a family or Canadian tradition, or do you just happen to like sauerkraut, because I wouldn't normally associate it with the US Thanksgiving (and yes, I like sauerkraut).
That crisp sounds very good.

The sauerkraut comes from my estonian heritage, it is a nice side dish with turkey.

I can believe that. There is a bar around here that makes a really good turkey ruben (turkey instead of corned beef) and the turkey and kraut is a good combo.

Turkey reubens seem to be pretty popular in pubs here and often offered as a choice instead of corned beef.

Sacrilege! Heathens! .... sounds like it might be tasty with just a touch of cranberry sauce.

We do have a lot of heathens here, particularly in my neighborhood.

Never done kraut with turkey but have done red cabbage with it, which is really similar. It's awesome. Kinda makes sense though, as duck and red cabbage together is amazing so why wouldn't turkey be similar?

They have nothing in common, because I hate kraut and I love red cabbage, so there!

When I prepare the sauerkraut, it's basically one jar of sauerkraut in wine/vinegar, heated with an equal amount chopped cabbage with a bit of brown sugar and butter. Heat on low-medium, stirring occasionally until browned, but not burned. Yum.
