apparently this asshole is pissed off because he can't provide unpaid internships.

I stumbled onto this, which happens to be quite critical of his idea, found it interesting that the only arguments FOR unpaid internships are so you earn "valuable experience" from successful people.

I have no opinion on the subject. I do think Cuban is IMHO an asshole, he seems to think he can walk on water. And seems to be competing with "Hairpiece" Trump on getting media exposure, grounds enough in my book to toss him in the asshole list.

What pisses me off is that these people think they're so special. MAYBE (and I certainly doubt it pretty much) in other countries they are, but here in Bananaland, the "successful people" (Business Owners, C-Level Execs, etc) I've met, if they have any "special talent" that guided them, they sure hide it well, and they're all spoiled brats too. So, as far as I am concerned, Cuban can go cry a river.

Yeah, people do work for you thus making you money, you have to pay them for the work they do. Who the fuck would have thunk it.

As likely as not, I think people like Trump and Cuban are proof of the bell-shaped curve. Out of the millions of idiots who have tried their hand at real estate, or whatever, just by chance there has to be one or two who get lucky. They are the tail of the curve.

The "proof" of this to me is exactly the fact that they think they are somehow just so special after, when they constantly exhibit behavior that they are not special at all (at least not in a good way).

There actually exist business types who's success does trace to talent, not luck (Elon Musk seems to be one example). Those people don't seem to have the need to keep pointing out how special they are, they just continue to do their thing.

There is a fine line between giving someone a training/learning experience and exploitation. The healthcare industry is full of unpaid interns who actually meet the legal criteria to be unpaid interns. And they PAY a college for the privilege of said internship.

Indeed. My experience is the majority of people, including those in the 1%, are actually really nice folks and do not seek the limelight and all that jazz. For many you'd actually have no idea they were so successful at first glance, and the know how lucky they are. But then there are the annoying idiots as well that go with that, unfortunately, but they are the minority.

I haven't kept track of the legality of unpaid internships, but I believe at one time they were legal (or more legal, or more common - I'm also not sure what the current law is on them). But the reason that they are more restricted now is probably because people like Cuban abused them, and treated them like slave labor, as serfs who should feel priviledged to be allowed in the presence of such greatness (you may now kiss my ring).

I also completely expect that the people who are bitching the most about having to pay interns are the ones that can most afford to do so.

I agree, I've seen Musk in action, thanking NASA for their support after the success of the Dragon Capsule tests and crediting them for the initial design of the PICA-X heat shield. MAYBE, IN PRIVATE he crosses the line between being a hard driver and a spoiled asshole (And I have no reason to believe he does) . But at least he gives credit where credit is due.

That reminds me of a book I was reading recently on introverts vs extroverts. Same social attachments.

I think too many people get the concept of confidence and arrogance mixed up. Myself, and most of my friends, as well as my husband, are all introverts. But most of us are pretty confident. None of us are arrogant, though the husband occasionally pretends to be arrogant just to yank chains.

On another note, Disney used to do (maybe they still do, I don't know), unpaid internships, but they provided room and board during said internships. I think that's a fair trade. What Disney did "wrong" (I call it wrong; opinions may vary), was they let the interns do all the fun work and gave them all fun projects to do, all in an effort to woo them to work for Disney after graduation. It always reminded me of those jokes about hell...

Sometimes. But I've met people that come across as arrogant even when they have the backup. I just refer to them as assholes.

I did a weeks unpaid trial for my first job, but overall my opinion on this is best expressed by the labour movement, "A fair day's work for a fair day's pay'.
