Hawaii

Postby pumpkinpi » Thu Jan 18, 2018 4:13 pm

So, I'm listening to my coworker tell me the story of what it was like to be hunkering down in a school as they thought there was a missile heading toward Hawaii this weekend. She was there for a long weekend taking her daughter back to school. Holy shit, I can't imagine having to go through that.

Yeah, waiting for the first lawsuits to start rolling in.

In other news, we're heading there in two weeks. Don't know now if that's good news or not... ;)

Yeah, I saw that too from many astronomy friends based there. The kinda crazy thing was various people's reactions- most of course have no idea where to go, and guessed it didn't matter, so a ton of them say they just made coffee and got back to bed with their wife or whatever.

Which on the one hand I get, but on the other I don't know if I could ever be so zen when faced with that situation.

The Dutch system btw has also similarly sent out a false alert once or twice, but everyone just figured it was wrong.

I think that anxiety in Hawaii was ramped up by the recent back and forth between Trump and Kim. And the knowledge that North Korea now has a missile that can reach Hawaii. Not a reassuring thought for many people. :o

By tomorrow night, I'll be standing, well probably lying down (29 hour day), in Hawaii. I guess I'm not really scared of a potential or even false missile alarm. Maybe I should be, but I'm just not. I'm going to enjoy Hawaii as much as I possibly can.

Oh wow, that's cool. Have fun!

Never been to Hawaii. It's become one of those things few people believe, because how on Earth can you travel to all the crazy places I have and ignore the obvious ones. Eh, I'll get around to it. :)

I hear they do have an observatory. ;)

Zing!

Well, it's not all that obvious, just a few tiny mountain tops peaking up out of the vast Pacific. It's taken me 50 years to find them. But Fisher is right, I believe they do a little astronomy there. :P
