I found this particularly crazy-

The average Venezuelan woman spends 20 percent of her annual salary on beauty products, while 4,000 people go under the knife every month in the name of self-improvement. Indeed, most banks in Venezuela offer long-term loan packages specifically tailored towards plastic surgery procedures.

Sadly, yes, it's exactly like that, economy going to hell or not.

My sister's girlfriends (and some guys) keep telling her to have a breast augmentation procedure, good thing she's got a good head on her shoulders.

On FWIS 2.0 I mentioned the bit about the bank loans for plastic surgery procedures. The crazy years for that were from 2000-2007. When I worked at a Large ISP down here, the Marketing Department was known as "Silicon Valley". Even these days there's plenty of street billboards for places that offer either Plastic Surgery, or "spas" that offer all sorts similar treatments.

I don't have a problem with women (or men) taking some "beauty" measures; a reasonable facelift, beauty creams, etc. But everyone will still grow old and die.

It goes beyond the point. Especially those "things" in Hollywood, who end up looking like The Joker or the Cheshire Cat.

Which also brings to mind the issue of culture. I sometimes browse international news pages; most recently Australia and Canada. Most of what I see reflected back at me is AMERICANISM.

And yet international folks gripe at us for this and that.

I dunno, if we're so bad and etc., stop mimicking us?

Their own cultures are so lousy, they've got to grab onto "culture-less" America?

I've often read/heard of Europeans bashing Americans for "not having culture." Just don't say that while downing a Big Mac or going to Euro-Disney...okay?

There were moments in my younger life when I considered having a nose fix, but then I looked at my father and realized it was part of my family. One day we passed a mirror with similar hats and just laughed out loud.

I understand with serious disfigurements like burns but beyond that I just don't get it.

Reminds me of a reality show we had in the USA where there were a bunch of women who did various contests in order to win the "perfect wedding" and along the way won plastic surgery so they'd look perfect for their weddings too. I don't know which was more fucked up, seeing women with broken noses throwing each other under the bus, or the tagline when a contestant left- "your wedding will go on, but it may not be perfect."

Kinda freaks me out to think that there are really people out there who think you need plastic surgery to look perfect for your wedding or a job that doesn't involve, say, being a supermodel.

Before actually reading the link, my thought went to that Columbian telenovella about drugs being shipped in breast implants and began thinking, there's drug shipments being made in butt implants?

If it actually happens This Telenovela would be called "SIn Culo no hay Paraiso" and I am NOT translating that

Yeah, I caught the"miami" version: "Sin Senos ..." , spanish with english subtitles. IIRC, there were incidents/death due to leaky implants.

I think I've got an idea the translation. Maybe they can move it to Mexico and do a sequel. Drugs being moved across the border in butt implants. A teen, not knowing her implants contain drugs, sits on a sharp object while onboard a bus. At the border, complications ensue...

And this is my cable company's contribution to this mess...... They didn't even bother to name the contest in spanish either.

And to to make it feel better, at a shopping mall I went to this morning (that has a large and expensive gym too), found a sign saying that selling Polymers, BioPolymers, etc. for "Aesthetic purposes" was against the law......

It's basically this show where moms pretend their five year old child is a living doll and make her (or him!) do beauty pageants. Including stuff like fake tans and eyebrow waxing and fake teeth so the kids look older (because baby teeth don't look as good, right?).

I see it every once in awhile flipping through channels but always have to switch after a few minutes because I feel like I'm participating in some sort of child abuse by watching.

Kid stuff... LITERALLY (pun GLEEFULLY INTENDED).

Reminds me of a documentary I saw once of modeling scouts going to Siberia to find 13 year old girls to model abroad. Conclusion from it was there is a reason you need to go to Siberia in order to find families ok with letting their daughters do it. (Basically the 13 year olds were taken to Japan, told they'd get X amount of work and tell people they were 16, but got no education and didn't get the promised work and ended up in debt to the scouts...)

Mind, the girl it follows around is apparently furious at her portrayal in the film as a victim. I'm not sure though how much that hinges on her thinking they edited to make things more dramatic, or if she actually was but is still modeling so she wants to keep up a good face.
