Every time I turn my head, I'm astonished by the extent to which my education in US history was blunted, glossed over, and whitewashed. Case in point:

I realize it is, shall we say, a bit late to do anything constructive about these atrocities. But the least damn thing people could do, is actually talk about this stuff in some depth, instead of treating it as a footnote!

Yeah, if you're interested in this stuff, pick up a copy of Lies My Teacher Told Me. It's a good read going through stuff like this and more (like how Hellen Keller was actually a huge socialist as an adult, but because that doesn't fit American narrative you only ever hear about what she did as a child).

The other famous one in this genre is A People's History of the United States, but I found that text far more dry to read stylistically.
