must i work out all of the details?

go someplace uncivilized. apply to a degree program and get a student visa.

if you'll cast your mind back, both brite and i offered to put you up. she has a sofa, dogs and now a small child. there's an idea! brite - would you like to hire sigma as a nanny? or perhaps as an au pair. with the house hunting and then moving you'll need help. there, sigma. problem solved.

seriously, sigma, the reporting is frightening. the analysts point out that what is unique about the situation is that it's the middle class protesting.
If I had a pool, he could be the cabana boy... and with Z leaving the country... no... wait... we can’t have Sigma, Fisher and Yosh in the same country... the chances that the 3 of them may try to figure out how to take over.... it was bad enough having Z, Fisher and Yosh here.... LOL

But... the real truth is... finding the right job for Sigma and the right kind of visa has been proving to be a stone bitch. He is a talented programer with (I believe) a master’s degree and in an industry that in this country doesn’t pay spit, unless you’re 12 (and then it pays less than spit).

I am a wretched programmer, i am a fairly good Systems Administrator, and no, I don't have a Master's degree, just a BSc in Physics.

I could do job the job of a Systems Architect (that's what people like me do when you get too old to manage servers), it's a good challenging job and it pays well. The thing is that to get a visa I need a job offer and most employers don't care for offering jobs to people who need work permits. It's sort of a chicken and egg problem.

Well, here some more info from both the BBC and CNN.

First: here's info in the hotbed of the protests: San Cristobal.

San Cristobal: The birthplace of Venezuela's protests

Some interesting Tidbits:

Among the San Cristobal protesters, nobody denies that the ultimate objective now is to force deep changes in the government, maybe even topple it.

But nobody seems to know how to achieve it, other than by "resisting".

"We have to be patient. This won't be a struggle of days. The Venezuelan who believes we will get rid of Maduro with these protests is delusional," said Pedro Pablo Quitero, a 60-year old university teacher who sympathises with the protesters.

As usual the "US is plotting against us"

And Jonathan Garcia, a local MP with the ruling United Socialist Party, told the BBC it was all part of a right-wing conspiracy aimed at creating chaos and violence to justify a foreign intervention.

"But we won't give them the excuse they're looking for by removing the protesters by force, like you would do in any other country in the world," said Mr Garcia.

"We know they have the cameras, the videos to try to convince the world that the unarmed people of Venezuela are being violently repressed by a tyrannical government in order to justify an US intervention," he added.

And finally:

That might explain why, despite all the discontent, San Cristobal remains pretty calm during the day - and there have not been reports of large violent clashes lately.

However, after nightfall the situation changes.

The protesters have accused the government of employing armed groups of civilians that routinely harass or attack them under the cover of night, and they insist that is why they need the barricades.

But the authorities imply that the clashes are a result of disgruntled neighbours trying to set themselves free of the restrictions imposed by unwelcomed protesters.

It is difficult to tell how long the situation will go on, but there's one slogan common to almost all the barricades: "He who tires, loses."

Here is something interesting, Picture #6 was taken in Altamira, here in Caracas (a customer of ours has their head office near there). Apparently the protesters stay in their barricades and the police throws tear gas at them.

This morning, the barricades I noticed on Wednesday were mostly gone. There were more cars on the street as well, not like in a normal day. but definitely more than on Wednesday.

And Nicky is still throwing a temper tantrum, with Panama, he just expelled 4 diplomats, (including the ambassador, of course). If all the boasting that we're making money selling oil to the Chinese is true. I expect him to backtrack soon.Because he just cut off the fastest route to China. So maybe the Evil Mandarin Empire will let him know that he just messed with the wrong Latin American "brother" country.

Now this is rich, CNN's (yes gringos, the same CNN he threatened to expel from the country) Christiane Amanpour has an exclusive interview with Nicky.

Nope, nothing like the '88 riots, more like the usual student protests we had in the '70s and '80s. Just that it's not contained in the Universities' grounds, it's on the street.

i'm sorry, sigma. i really didn't mean to dismiss your situation as trivial. 'way back there's been mention of you in a packing crate and the image of you in a box with books and a reading light - my contributions, as i recall, were compelling.

ok, i'll panic for both of us (i've never thought of npr as alarmist; that's what i've been listening to) and of course you can' leave your parents. i don't know if this is typical or not but years ago i worked with a consultant from the company cap gemini. they took care of getting her a green card in exchange for her agreement to work for them for several years. do watch yourself with consulting companies. i can tell you stories.

That was before the great recession, I tried to find H1B sponsored jobs, NO DICE.

I actively sent resumes to employers looking in this place. The ones that answered made it clear that they would employ me ONLY if I already had an H1B visa. Like I said, a Chicken and Egg problem.

ETA: btw no problem, I don't know what NPR is showing about the mess down here though.

the penny's dropping. companies have followed outsourcing with offshoring. why go to the expense of bginging someone in when you can just send him/her a laptop?

i will see if the company i subcontract from is interested, however.

I went to Altamira today (was doing an "freelance" job), the place is full of litter from barricades set up last week, on the side streets saw more barricades in one morning than the ones I saw elsewhere all week. Little police presence and a fair amount of traffic.

I am still of the opinion that this will die down in a couple of weeks.

I found two posts at my favorite blog about Venezuela that might help illustrate how this mess is going and where is going to end up.

This Blog Post illustrates how things are going at the epicenter of the protests.

But I find this one much more important.

Bottom line: This is going nowhere, THIS TIME the shit won't hit the fan, NEXT TIME? maybe, when is it going to be Next Time? give it one or maybe two more years (IMHO).

A lot of people (even on the side of Chavismo) were sure that there was going to be trouble, the question always was how big it was going to be. Again, THIS TIME looks like it's going out with a whimper.

I think it will change when the majority of the people no longer have any hope that the current regime or government can make things better. As long as the majority believe that things might get better OR won't get any worse then they will stick with that pony. Let them lose all hope of that and then it's Katy bar the door. It will be like trying to change film while roller skating in a buffalo herd in full stampede with a 150 pound pack on your back. :P

Actually it can be broken down as follows:

1) What is the feather in the cap of Chavismo? A sharp reduction in inequality.

2) How was this reduction in inequality achieved? Subsidies to the poor payed for by the Oil Price Boom that ocurrerd at the turn of the century, No progressive Tax Code, inefficient, ineffective collection of taxes (which by themselves are major cans of worms), in essence: Unsustainable Subsidies

3) Since the Financial Crisis of 2008 things have steadily getting worse. Since the government is running out of hard currency, it first restricted access to US dollars even more than usual (but still with plenty of loopholes) And now it has gotten to the point that a lot of the scarcity issues are traced to the inability of obtaining foreign currency why? First of all, we're a net importer of food, and furthermore, imported goods are needed all over the supply chain. So, the inability to get foreign currency causes most of the scarcity problems. High Levels of Crime, High Levels of Inflation, Rampant Government Corruption etc. (Even the incompetence of the Government in managing the electric power Grid) have been part of our life for decades now. So, I don't think any of those will be triggering factors.

4) SInce the foreign currency situation continues to worsen, the government has literally removed all subsidies to the middle class (particularly the loopholes that existed to have access to foreign currency), the one it won't touch (yet) is the subsidy to gasoline prices.

Which leads us to:

5) As the situation deteriorates further, the government will be forced to cut back on the subsidies to the working class, THAT is when the shit is expected to hit the fan. I expect that to happen within the next two years, tops.

This sounds like the leftist version of Tea Party politics.

I was forced to go to a tea party once by my MIL.
I was surrounded by women who discussed nothing but the flavours and the rituals of preparing and drinking tea.
Not sure why this new "tea party" has anything to in common with them.
I mean, they had loads of practical information on a subject and it made sense.

Simple, the New Tea Party uses Nestle Instant Tea. The Tea Party that your MIL made you go to uses Lipton Tea. Good thing though, we all know what would have happened if they used Earl Grey don't we?

Just me wondering how two things both called "tea party" are world apart.
The making sense stuff was the tea party I went to, not the one that is now infamous.

Just got around to reading this, which might describe the whole western media's response to the Venezuelan crisis. They haven't gotten around to reporting on it like they have Syria and now Ukraine. And of course now there's an airplane missing.

In the meantime..... More of the Same.

Venezuelan forces clear Caracas protest hotspot

Nope, I was nowhere near there on Sunday, went past it on Friday and Saturday. Full of Rubbish but no demonstrators, I guess they gathered there on Sunday.

OTOH a friend of my mother's called her from (where else?) Miami on Saturday saying that someone told her that there were riots and pillaging on a SuperMarket we usually go shop to, Guess what? flat lie, everything was normal on Saturday and Sunday.
