US Republicans in debt-ceiling offer

US Republicans have offered President Barack Obama a short-term debt limit increase to stave off default.

So the latest from NPR is that the Republicans are blaming the Pentagon for not paying benefits to the families of fallen soldiers... Even though the Pentagon says they don't have the legal authority to do so on their own.

Dear Republican congress-infants: Stop playing the blame game. You caused the government shutdown. You prevented the benefits from being payed. You are adults, and you get to deal with the consequences of your actions. Get a fucking handle on yourselves and act the part!

The benefits are being paid by a charity called Fisher House. (fisherhouse.org) the Pentagon is to pay them back, once the government is opened back up for business.

Which won't be today, the President rejected a deal to raise the debt ceiling, but not reopen the government....

Mr Boehenr.... A clean CR bill....

i love it how China is suddenly realising that holding $1.3 trillion in US debt may not have been the best investment strategy. :sos:

There was a report on this on NPR the other day. After the 2008 downturn, they decided to invest in other things, and picked Euros. Yeah, that didn't work out so well either. So they are, to a great extent, stuck with us, and us with them.

Collapsing the USA economy, global disaster all under the guise of some misguided ideology.

The tea party may bring a tear of pride to Bin Laden's dead eye, for they are about to do what he could not.

If they do, I hope they get the same punishment.

They even have the gall of saying that the consequences of the US hitting the debt ceiling are nowhere as bad as EVERYONE who actually knows about this business says.

Here is a scary bit of trivia for you: Osama Bin Laden was a highly educated man who purportedly stated that his goal was to totally bankrupt the U.S. He knew that conventional methods such as suicide bombers would not bring about our downfall but that complete economic collapse would. If I were a conspiracy theory whacko I would be claiming that the Mad Hatter Tea Party is actually a bunch of Al Qaida sleeper agents. :o

So were the 9/11 attacks an intentional part of the plan, or something he did just for fun?

Interestingly, without 9/11 I doubt that the tea party could have pulled this one off.
It united a lot of people for good and also united a lot of total nut jobs.

It lead to a huge increase in debt, by eventually driving us into two wars (Afganistan and Iraq). Not to mention money spent on other security issues. Just think if we hadn't spent 2 trillion dollars on all of that.

Plus, the World Trade Center was a huge economic mecca and a great symbol if you're wanting to bring someone down economically.

Hmm- I wonder how useful such an argument is just because all huge events in history end up influencing things years down the line. I'm sure I could sit down right now and make a convincing case about how this is actually the fault of the collapse of the USSR or the JFK assassination if I really had to.

From the research I've done, the Tea Party began as a response to the government bailout of those "too big to fail", and that was something I could get behind. Then, it went all wonky, and that's why I hesitate to join groups... not sure how we can bring change without joining a group and without violence. Very sad.

The argument that without Bin Laden we wouldn't be heading into an economic collapse is of more value pre-collapse to make people think rather than as a post-collapse analysis playing the what if game.
IOW, if we can show that the tea party is heading down the path of fulfilling Bin Laden's goals then it may just make enough people think that its not the way to go. Basically vilify the motive to by showing it to be the same desire as a known terrorist. Which in reality, it is.

SFC, I remember the first time I heard about the Tea Party was protesting a few months after Obama was elected for the bailout/stimulus stuff that got in. I remember it because it was the first real anti-Obama stuff that cropped up... plus they were calling themselves Teabaggers and what they were doing Teabagging, and we were cracking up about it.

In many ways I never really thought of them so much anti "too big to fail" so much as anti-Obama as a result, and I don't really think that's changed.

China weighs in.

I can't say I blame them for their recommendations one bit.

Not sure why you think that is the case.
China is pretty low on the list of major IMF contributors.

I think he's saying that because China is just as bad as the U.S., but I certainly wouldn't say they make the U.S. look ethical.

You're right of course; I meant they make the US look ethical with respect to domestic policy. Their foreign policy is comparable to ours. And I believe my American exceptionalism was showing there; sorry.
