A New Hope?

Postby SciFiFisher » Mon Jul 23, 2018 4:50 pm

There have been some interesting news stories in just the last few days that give me some hope that the Republican party might still be saved. Like this article Note to GOP: 'History will revile you'

Or this one GOP Chairman Resigns

Of course, It's not enough for them to write opinion pieces. They will have to vote against their own party at the polls. The base apparently still isn't ready to give up on Trump and his merry band of traitors. And that can make it hard for the rest of the conservatives. Because their choices are going to be 1. vote for democratic candidates. 2. vote for independent candidates. 3. vote for the Russian sponsored, let the poor die quickly, give more money to the rich, Republican candidates.

Given the number of liberals who are dissatisfied with the Democratic Party there is a chance that those who see themselves as moderates or centrists on both the right and the left might actually defect en mass to the independent party if they can field some good candidates. But, that is not very likely in the near term. The Democrats seem to be being dragged more towards Democratic Socialism ala American style than they are falling apart.

The Republicans on the other hand truly seem to be losing people. conservative leaning independents, moderate conservatives, and centrists who stuck by the party are starting to really be appalled by the abandonment of the core priniciples that conservatives have espoused for many years. And that core group of voters who switched from voting for Obama in 2012 to voting for Trump in 2016 don't seem as inclined to vote Republican in 2018 or 2020.

That is going to leave the conservative base some pretty hard choices. I don't think they can accept most of those choices. Which potentially means the aggressiveness and the end justifies the means attitudes are going to get worse before they get better.

One can only hope. I am tired of waking up and wondering what the hell he tweeted that was awful this time and who it pissed off

I'll believe it when I see it. Right now, I feel our only real recourse is to vote like hell in November.
Yes, I have a life. It's quite different from yours.

I think so too. Massive losses at the polls at everything from the local to the national level would probably actually help the moderates in the GOP. All the talking heads pretty much agree that as long as the conservative base is strong enough to vote for the bad apples we aren't going to get any good apples running or they are going to fold their values into a nice little package and put them up on a shelf while they serve in office.
