He was an asset. There are many types of assets when it comes to the spy game. In Trump's case he was someone who was influential enough and easily manipulated. He was a "useful idiot". I am pretty sure the Russians never counted on how
useful he would turn out to be.

Sadly they've been making a comeback in recent years, and the term has entered the popular lexicon (or at least the popular lexicon among libertarian-leftists.) Follow leftist journalists on Twitter and you'll see plenty of tankies popping up to harass said journalists, usually about not being sufficiently class-reductionist, having ever enabled US imperialism in any way, promoting trans rights or Black liberation instead of focusing on class struggle... etc. Seriously tankies and the authoritarian left fucking suck. Some of them even want other leftists to ally with far-right militias, against the US govt as a common enemy - literally wanting to help out neo-Nazis because of supposedly being aligned in class struggle (which they aren't, but they're too fucking stupid to realize it).
