The House voted against the GOP-led Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act Tuesday, with 256 representatives voting in favor, shy of the 270 needed to pass the bill. Over 200 Republicans along with 52 Democrats supported the bill, and one Republican joined the 144 Democrats who opposed it.

The bill would give secretaries of the United States Treasury the power to designate nonprofit organizations as "terrorist-supporting" and, thus, strip those groups of their tax-exempt status. The bill's passage would apply the amendments made in it to taxable years after its enactment, including those of the incoming Trump administration.

This is pretty obviously designed as a cudgel to shut down pro Palestine nonprofits, which is already vile. But in the hands of Trump and his goons it could be used against anyone they hate.

That's the way it is with these guys... They're useful to block fascists from office if progressives aren't available, but once fascists are in office, they will turn around and hand them more power. They're the definition of fair-weather friends.

The good news is that it didn’t pass. For the record I am not against shutting down non-profit organizations that are really fronts for terrorist organizations. I just believe we already have enough tools to do that if it is really needed. And in a rare consensus with one of my favorite liberals I agree the Trump administration doesn’t need more ways to intimidate and terrorize people.

But yeah, just in general I dislike handing the executive branch more ways to unilaterally fuck people over. Didn't like it with Bush and torture, didn't like it with Obama and drone strikes, and don't like it with this.

I suspect you would fall more into the democratic socialist camp. A well regulated capitalism can do tremendous good for most of the people. The problem is that we have a shitty approach to regulating our capitalism in the United States. Well, that is one of the major problems.

Democratic socialist yes, social democrat no. The problem with "regulated capitalism" IMO is that regulatory capture is very difficult to avoid, so you eventually wind up with Jack Welch type insanity no matter what you do.

Not that the equivalent isn't a problem in more controlled economies. You see this in China for instance, where the state itself is the major shareholder in corporations, and enriches itself at the expense of citizens.
