If anyone wants a crappy GPS unit, I'll pay you take this Garmin Oregon 450 off my hands. I am tired of dealing with it and its fucking Basecamp software.

is he competent within the confines of his job requirements? perhaps he has decent taste in music. or is kind to animals. you must find something positive about him or else you won't be able to stop thinking about his beliefs whenever you look at him. or come up with a way of laughing it off - 'oh yes, that's just jim being jim.'
He's a bit of a struggle professionally. I try to cut him slack because he is "new" but he's been at this job for 2 years now.

2 yrs?!! I think that it's time to have a serious talk with him.

I'll leave that to his supervisor. But I believe she wants me to throw him under the bus.

I'm really down at the moment. The latest retirement party tonight (the second this week) was the straw (that broke the camel's back).

We've had like 5 retirements at our company this year, the first was a sort of early push out the door as part of some layoffs (we also had several layoffs); I kind of get the feeling that the other 4 are "getting out while the getting is good", though all are due for retirement. I don't know if they are going to fill any or all of these positions, but the indications are at least some of them will not be, so it will be more work for the rest of us.

I hear all these speeches from people at these events as to how great a place this was to work at, how people are the number one resource, how they could never worked so long at a place that they didn't love, and I'm thinking "is it is me, or am I missing something" because I've worked at several places, this one isn't horrible, but it isn't that great either, and I actually rather hate my job.

We're closing down our plant in Canton that I've been very involved in. I thought I was getting a new boss, someone I like better, but no, I'm only getting a dashed line to them, but I'm keeping my old boss as my primary and he is still a terrible boss. And every day seems to be another pile of crap and if I'm lucky I only have to put up with it for another 5 years before I can get out.

And then I get home and we have a message from the vet - the cats had their annual check-up last week and there is something a little off on their blood tests and she wants us to come back in next week, but don't worry. Uh uh.

Crap.

So sorry. :( I hope the cats are okay. Seriously.

I didn't realize you worked at ODOT.
Hope it's minor for the cats. If they didn't come out and say it was something serious, it's probably something like mild hyperthyroid or something similar controlled by medication. Hopefully.

Swift, your job sounds like where I was, so I can relate. Hopefully you can ride it out without things getting worse.

Hope the cats are OK, too. It's not always bad when the blood tests come back with negative results. Our boy cat had a bad result but it seems to have been a temporary thing.

Hope the cats are ok. As for the other, just remember that the older one gets, the less tolerance for stupidity one has, PARTICULARLY from those in charge. Might be the real reason on why companies are reluctant to hire people over 40 :P

I can empathize about the job. Truthfully, the only way I can relate about the cats is to remember that some people consider animals to be creatures who have souls and are just 4 legged humans. :P So, I will hope that your 4 legged people are not seriously ill. And I will refrain from being socially unacceptable and offer to share recipes. :P

True Story! My first "real" job "off the farm" was as a dishwasher at a Chinese Restaurant.

My idea of subtle consists of making sure no one sees the sledge hammer. I am discrete like that.

I'm rebuilding the deck off my kitchen and ordered some lumber from the local Lowe's to be delivered. The contract delivery people sent me two automated messages saying it would be delivered between 11 and 1 yesterday. At 1:20 it's not here so I call them to inquire. They tell me that Lowe's informed them the wood was not in stock so the delivery is delayed. But no one calls me to let me know. I call Lowe's only to be put on hold for longer than I wanted to wait.

This was an online order and the status says 'in progress'. Real helpful. So, not sure when I'll get my delivery.

I hope you get some decent wood. I'm appalled every time I go there and see the prices they are asking for the quality they are giving.

In this case, it doesn't have to be all that great. I'm just trying to make a little-used deck safe to walk out on.

very funny, fisher. one needn't go the full 'fur baby', 'animal companions' route to be attached to and feel responsibility for an animal.

swift, I hope that the cats are ok. as for the speeches, it's possible that the people were saying what they felt was expected or that they were fortunate enough to have had no major difficulties at work. I do remember the talk given by the hr rep at the separation meeting just before I took my trip through the revolving door. she urged us to be proud of ourselves because we had made Pfizer what it was. right, I thought. and that's why we're getting the boot.
