Critic: "The video game industry portrays women horribly, here are a bunch of nasty examples."
Fans: "I don't think it's as big a deal as you say, here are a bunch of better counterexamples."

Actual conversation...

Critic: "The video game industry portrays women horribly, here are a bunch of nasty examples."
Fans: "DON'T YOU DARE SAY THAT OR I'LL MURDER YOUR RAARRRRGGHHH"

You have to ask yourself how a guy could even begin to be so messed up, as to threaten a woman with violence and bodily harm for critiquing video games.

Because some men are just that fucked up

Because they will threaten bodily harm to people who disagree with them. Or don't like their favorite TV show, or etc

Because violent video games promote violent behaviour?

Because the internet and statements of the obvious have just become background noise that only zealots and trolls pay attention too. Makes meaningful conversation difficult, which I believe is a good reason to be parsimonious when discussing issues and not keep flogging the dead donkeys.

As a woman who is treading carefully more into the public sphere when it comes to science, this stuff always makes me pause. Not in the sense that I'm going to stop doing what I do, but it kinda makes me thankful I'm not a gamer or hardened atheist or what have you, and then that makes me guilty that I'm not willing to be vocal and help those women more.

Please don't feel guilty about it, Rommie. I have a lot of respect for you, and don't want to see you come to harm at the hands of raging imbeciles. Seriously, I think you're doing enough being a woman and a scientist, and showing the world how awesome and capable you are. You don't have to put your life on the line too.

As for Sarkeesian, I should watch some of her presentations. I'm thinking that, if she provokes this sort of horrible response, she must be on to something.

Agreed, fucked up indeed.

I've never heard of Anita Sarkeesian till now, so I headed up to her Blog to see what was so "inflammatory" (and before you say ANYTHING, even if it was, it's not a justification for death threats).

Found nothing "inflammatory". I like video games a lot (even if I can't buy them anymore) but never cared much for that sort of games. I don't think I'd like FPSs much these days.

So, yeah, I must agree.
