Words I hate

Had a crappy day? Think your only friend is the dog? Got fired? Someone piss in your Wheaties? Just need to blow off some steam and rant? Here's the place to do it. No judgement, maybe some sympathy, possibly some advice... but definitely a safe place to go off on the world.

Words I hate

Postby pumpkinpi » Thu Jun 20, 2013 3:00 pm

dongle--a small piece of hardware that attaches to computer, TV, or other electronic device and enables additional functions.

fungi--plural of mushrooms, of course. My department at work was hiring an assistant professor of evolutionary mycology & curator of fungi, and for weeks I would get emails about the interview candidates. I could not stand seeing the word "fungi" in my inbox.

LIPS--ok, it's not such a bad word. But it's the acronym of a symposium in my line of work, and for some reason it grosses me out in that context. Once again, I get emails saying "Come to LIPS!" "Register for LIPS!" "Become a sponsor of LIPS!" on a weekly basis.

nuk--as in pacifier. But Russter is addicted to hers, and also always losing it, so we are forever referring to it. I gave in and started using nuk because it's the shortest version of the word. I also hate the shortened term "paci."

Better than being frustrated with it and yelling, "come on LIPS!"

We've always referred to them as 'binky' in our family.

utilise

British variant of utilize

Here I thought utilize was an American bastardisation of utilise.

You can Australianise it thus:
How do we carry all these camping and shooting supplies to the site, a trailer?
Nah, we'll utilise it.

See Morrolan, you can't use, use in that FANTASTIC! sentence. :P

I've recently developed a fondness for the word, "Fantastic!" due to my attachment to the tenth Doctor. 8-)

The 4th was my last.
I started with the second.
Never got into it with the 5th so stopped there.

You absolutely can love or hate any word you wish to, but I'm "sorry", I don't agree. Yes, actions speak louder than words (as they say), but words are important, apologizes are important, and "sorry" is the standard way to do so. The fact that some people have such a problem saying it, shows how important it is.

But just saying "sorry" and continuing to do the same thing that required you to say that... yeah, that's not good.

If I offended anybody I take full responsibility.
Do you all feel better now?

I hate the phrase, "I take full responsibility".
Mainly because its says, "I fucked up. Now I admitted it, fuck you.Nothing is going to change. I am not going to do anything about it. I am not going to try to fix it. I just wanted you to know that it was me that fucked you over you little twerp and there's not a damned thing you can do about it".
