This persisted a long time in part thanks to the Trump regime, but it goes way back - there was basically an industry conspiracy.

Heard about this from my sister because there is a baby food eater in their house and it's... a confusing thing to navigate for parents. Like, some is rehashed- people have known for years for example that some foods are higher in arsenic (like rice), and a lot of it is just because after decades of dumping crap into the ground we have trace amounts of toxins in the food that grows in it. So it's not that someone in the factory is physically pouring this crap into the processors or something, and unclear whether you would have this if you were to make your own baby food if the stuff you buy in the store would already have the heavy metals in it anyway. So, as you can imagine, real fun times right now sorting this out for working parents, because there is a lot of stuff that becomes a scare in the baby set and can be hard to know when the scares are valid.

This is a good article explaining the issue in more nuance. My general understanding from it is we're probably just fucked in terms of what we're all eating, but because babies are small it can affect them more. Real comforting thoughts right there huh?
