Indeed and doesn't sound like woo-woo stuff. The GSM encryption mechanisms all suck. particularly A5/1 (used in 2G networks) which was broken in the early 2000s, even the current one used in 3G: A5/3 has been broken since 2010 at least. So it makes sense that these fake towers force phones to work on 2G, it's easier to break.
