I do think it's interesting fodder for my friends with backgrounds in AI who think it would solve all our problems.

More seriously - I've thought for a while that, if (heaven forbid) we ever get around to strong-AI territory, it would be good to have fair treatment of AIs codified as law. Basic stuff like not murdering them; and also some maybe less obvious stuff.
e.g.
No programming/raising AIs for specifically military purposes from day one. Likewise for specific business or organizational purposes.
Why? Same reason we don't use child soldiers, or allow children to be raised as indentured servants.

I can 100% guarantee that right now there are a ton of military and business and organizational type groups are using AI already, and that this will not happen.
Why? Because it's not like you wake up one day and say "hey, look, this computer is sentient and like a small child and of course we should treat it right!" There are a ton of interesting applications along the way that are really beneficial for many purposes- think machine learning, for example, which came out of AI research and is pretty ubiquitous already- so it's not like waking up one day with a cute, defenseless kid like a Spielberg movie.

Until or if they ever achieve true sentience the current state of AI is that it is a really smart machine that can learn within a limited framework. i.e. machine learning
