The world just got a bit dumber. Heard this on the way in this morning. When diagnosed in the mid '60's, he was given 2 years to live.

The Motor Neurone Disease Association, of which Prof Hawking had been a patron since 2008, reported that its website had crashed because of an influx of donations to the charity.

ALS is a MND, and I think he had ALS, right?

I believe he did have ALS. Which is what made his longevity all the more remarkable. If you make it 5 years with ALS it's a miracle. I have no idea what to call it when you make it over 50 years with ALS.
