Some of you may have heard some BS flying around about a SETI signal being discovered.

News flash: it's probably not.

Slightly more interesting: a friend of a friend was writing an article for Smithsonian Magazine about it, and ended up in touch. So I got quoted here! Yay!

Yeah, true story- today is technically my last day of work. (From here on out, I am a "guest.") Wasn't planning on sending it around, but the other outreach guy in my dept sent around his stuff, so ended up doing so.

At this point let's pause a sec and contemplate this strange universe where the fact that I can discuss a scientific claim with a major research magazine goes down as a bad thing... :P

Why am I not really surprised. It seems that human nature is really pretty universal no matter where you go. :(

If I've learned anything lately, it's that people see what they want to see.

Like, I am obsessing lately because my sister is having a baby shower next month, and I would really, really want to take a week off to see her and my family but also rest. But it's not clear yet, because even though I am unemployed as of today but still at my desk, there is serious worry that I will come across as not "dedicated enough." Even though I haven't taken off a week since Christmas, which is kinda crazy in Europe, and no one gives a fuck about the other PhD student who shows up at noon each day or everyone else who took off several weeks this summer.

As I said, people see what they want to see. Which I really wish meant I could then just toss off others and not care what they think in this situation, but yeah...

Btw, sorry a casual discussion of aliens turned into another bitching session about my situation. :P

I read the story, and thought immediately that I bet no Scientist on Earth actually thought it was ET. And then it wasn't.

That's not cool. That's like ... anti climactic.
