Fast radio bursts could be far-flung magnetars, new evidence

So last week some weird radio signals were discovered in the sky, I posted about it on Reddit, and my editor at Astronomy saw it and asked if I'd write them a piece. Which I did! https://astronomy.com/news/2020/05/fast ... e-suggests

Thought some of you guys might be interested, both in the discovery and the author.

Wow congrats! And cool to see there are leads on the FRB mystery.

The magnetic field of a magnetar is about a hundred million times stronger than any human-made magnet. That’s strong enough that a magnetar would horrifically kill you if you got within about 620 miles (1,000 km) of it. There, its insanely strong magnetic field would pluck electrons from your body’s atoms, essentially dissolving you.

Magneto approves.

That author name seems familiar for some reason.
