Pluto's moon NOT named Vulcan

Pluto's moon NOT named Vulcan

Postby Rommie » Wed Jul 03, 2013 3:17 am

This was on the old forum but I'm posting it for TSC cause I recall him being upset about the name Vulcan (or was it someone else?) as it didn't fit into the underworld mythology. Turns out the IAU agrees- http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/a ... an/277484/
Yes, I have a life. It's quite different from yours.

You're right - that was me. I was glad when I saw that the IAU did the right thing today. And, yes, the name was Vulcan - I was upset not only that it didn't fit the underworld theme, but also that Vulcan is a name that should be reserved for any hypothetical small object closer to the sun than Mercury. I know it really isn't likely that we'll find something there at this point, but the name should remain available. I would have liked to see an edgier underworld name, though... Satan, maybe?

Boy, wouldn't that piss off the Heinlein fans pulling for Earth's moon to be renamed that?

I was more going for the Selene from of "Underworld" movie fame.
Played by kate Beckinsale.

Works both ways though. LOL
