There actually used to be a vaccine for Lyme disease. It's no longer available because public fear killed it, fueled by anti-vax propaganda.

Oh yeah, it's nuts. Your dog can be vaccinated against it, but not you! (There's an excellent podcast by NH Public radio all about Lyme disease, "Patient Zero," that you might like.)
Luckily last I heard, a new vaccine is under trials now and should be approved in the next year or two.

You can count on me to be among the first in line for it TBH. With all my chronic shit, Lyme would really fuck me up.

Yep, I think it also just shows what a shift the disease has taken in the last decade or two, particularly as ticks head further north with climate change. Getting a tick even a decade or two back was sorta just a minor annoyance like a mosquito bite, now everyone wears long pants when going through grass or doesn't at all.

Maybe the Delta Variant will take care of enough of them that the rest will learn to keep their damned mouths shut.

That's what I keep hoping, but then I think I'm being mean.

Yeah gonna be honest, the jokes about the stupid people killing themselves off stopped being funny for me a while ago. Far too many echoes of eugenics, and also it's not just the unvaccinated who are at risk. Remember, at least two people on FWIS (including me) are immunocompromised, and also every case of COVID raises the risk of a vaccine-evading variant.
That's the thing about public health, it's public. Everyone has to be protected, or everyone suffers.

Yeah. I was so frustrated at work last May/June when mask mandates were lifted. We had spent so much time enforcing the mandate with our visitors, with public health, particularly the safety of our staff, as the driving factor. Then when we couldn't enforce masks anymore (being governed by University rules) our leadership was saying "It's changed from an issue of public health to an issue of personal responsibility." Yeah, when my only personal choice is to stay home because you are not taking personal responsibility (the most obvious offenders were parents coming in with kids under 12 unmasked) you are making the choice for me. Fortunately we are back to mask mandates at work.
