Well, some people could read XOF and not get it.

I'm one American who realized it was satire before I saw it.

My opinion then? It's bad satire. It was almost painful watching it try.

That article makes a good attempt to justify it: "Phil Coldiron described it as 'one of the greatest of all anti-imperialist films,' a parody of Hollywood form whose superficial 'badness' is central to its critique"

Nice try though, but I'm still not buying it. :)

I assure you that Heinlein was not being sarcastic when he wrote the book. the movie *was* a riot.

Heinlein - an overrated hack with an overactive libido.

 That is so true.

I still remember Friday, mind. It was a bit like a David Weber novel, only without any shame or self-consciousness.

I enjoyed the movie from an entertainment POV. The rivalry between the flyers and the infantry is not too horribly exaggerated. Although, I don't think it actually involves fist fights these days.

As for the original book and the movie the ideas expressed are not really that new. Society has often struggled with the idea of "earned" citizenship. But, I can see how the movie might be considered satire. :P

Maybe not in the bars you hang out in. ;)
