Guilty Movies

Code Monkey's Movie Scene thread got me thinking about movies (imagine that). There used to be a thread about songs most would consider lame or bad that you would admit to secretly liking. I thought the same thing about movies. Not necessarily bad movies, but not Academy Award quality. I have a few off the top of my head:

Major League, the comedy about the hapless Cleveland Indians. Bob Uecker's triumphant quote at the end is so prolific to us, that Mrs. T and I, and our best friends screamed it at the end of an Indian's victory we got to see in the last season at Municipal Stadium.
Fly Away Home, I absolutely love this movie about a young girl who adopts orphaned goslings.
The Princess Bride, I think I can recite every line in this movie.
The very first Naked Gun, I don't remember ever laughing harder in a theatre. (The Long Island Ice Teas may have helped some.)

Wow... I have so many

Major League and The Princess Bride are certainly on my list, though I don't see how they could be on anyone's lame list.

I'm not even sure I think of them that way (guilty pleasures)... for me it is more the movie you can't help but watch of fun minutes of if you happen upon it on TV, even though you've watched it a thousand times.

THE INDIANS WIN IT! THE INDIANS WIN IT! OH MY GOD THE INDIANS WIN IT!

Que pasa, there a Pedro?
Hats for bats. Keep bats warm. Gracias.

I only have one thing to say to you Vaughn. Strike this Mother Fucker out!

So that's no runs on what, one hit? That's all we got, one god damn hit?
You can't say god damn on the radio.
Nobody's listening anyway....

I could go on and on. This movie is probably in my top 3. I saw it in the theater 3 times--despite it being R, my parents helped me sneak in! I was about 13 years old and at the peak of my baseball obsession. When it came out on VHS, I rented it and used a cassette recorder to make an audio copy of the whole movie, and I listened to it over and over. So if I ever want to drive anyone crazy, I can watch it and speak every word.

I wish it wasn't so filled with swear words. I can't wait to watch it with Buster. I know he'll love it. There is a dubbed version for broadcast tv, but the substitutions are so bad it's not funny!

Another movie I know every word to is Grease. Buster asked me a while ago what my favorite movie is, and without even thinking that's what I said. There are plenty of other movies that I enjoy more and are better than Grease, but that and Major League have stayed with me my whole life. Back to the Future trilogy, too. My dad and I love those.

A more recent favorite is P.S. I Love You. It stars Hilary Swank as a recent widow whose husband arranged for surprise presents for her every month for a year after he dies. I bawl through the whole thing.

No other movies are popping into my head, so I'd have to say those are my top choices, and yes they are guilty! No shame. In fact, I'd change the categorization from Guilty to No Apologies. One of the djs for our local npr music station has a No Apologies section every day.

No Apologies then. I like that!
Some of these guys are way past their prime.
Some of these guys never had a prime.
This guy's dead!
Then, cross him off...

Jake: That ball wouldn't have gone out of alot of parks.
Ricky: Name one.
Jake: (Pauses), Yellowstone.*

*This scene was deleted in the first movie but I saw it over and over in the trailer. They used the joke in Major League II I believe.

Mrs. T loves Grease. I think she and Pumpkinpi think about it the same way.

Mars Attacks!
Bubba Hotep
They Call Me Bruce
Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes
Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back
Beverly Hills Ninja
Wayne's World

Lame? Maybe B Grade. I love B grade movies. But not all of them. Campy. Can't Take Itself Too seriously. Funny in an off kilter way is always good. Sometimes a serious B movie works.

Guilty pleasure? As in not proud of it?

At the top of my list is the original "Dirty Dancing". I just love that movie. And I have nostalgia because the first time I saw it was in a theater while attending a Bible college that didn't allow students to go to theaters.

I loved "The Dream Team". That's what turned me into a serious Christopher Lloyd fan.

I was brainwashed (by my husband) to falling in love with "Big Trouble in Little China". The humor in that is very Australian.

Finally, I've been known to waste afternoons watching Lifetime movies, but I couldn't tell you any specific ones off the top of my head.

more "shit, she's still talking..."

BTILC - He's a good person. I'm still shocked that BTILC didn't even get nominated.

If the criteria for selection is "know every word", Monty Python and the Holy Grail would probably be at the top of my list. At lunch today someone mentioned something about "bring out your dead" and I almost recited the whole scene.
"I'm getting better"
"No you're not, you'll be stone dead in a moment"
"Oh, I can't take him like that, its against regulations"

Over the weekend "Battleship" was on. Even I would call it a stupid movie (I'm mean it's based on a idiotic 1960s game), but I had to sit and watch it for a bit. I mean, come one, it has aliens, and warships, and lots of explosions.

Don't forget the cool underdog plot. Outgunned. Earth about to be conquered. The US Navy to the Rescue! :P

Yeah, I love the idea that they could go grab the decommissioned (for 20 years) Missouri, get the boilers fired up, and sail away just like that. Not to mention they still had live rounds on board.

Not exactly movies, But as cheesy as it was I liked BattleStar Galactica (the original one), Also the Wing Commander Interactive Movies (WC III, WC IV and WC Prophecy)

Cheesy is awesome! I loved the original BSG. The newer one was more post apocalyptic and dark. OK, at times. But, the original was much more fun!

How could I forget Holy Grail? Maybe because it's the best movie ever!

Ended up for some reason watching the second half of Battleship. Loved they brought out the Missouri and the old guys were there to save the day.

Navy indeed!

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not some farcical aquatic ceremony.

(actually... I'm starting to look very kindly at strange women lying in ponds as a system of government, and think it may be a major improvement)

It certainly couldn't be any worse.
