General movie thread.

I took in Man of Steel today. Not bad, and quite a bit different from previous versions of the story. Maybe a little too much gratuitous building destruction, but hey, I can live with that.

I have a friend who looks just like Amy Adams, so every time I see Adams on the screen, I see my friend. Both are easy on the eye.

Haven't seen Man of Steel but thought the trailer looked oddly interesting. Superman vs. Kryptonian Space Fascists?

My brother and I went to see "Man of Steel" yesterday. We thought it was a good reboot of the old franchise. There was a consensus that between Batman and Superman Metropolis is not a good place to live. Way to many buildings falling down and crushing things.

But wait - Batman lives in a totally different place: Gotham City.

Total Recall reboot. Big thumbs down. I feel asleep. Both Mom and FZ told me I got more out of the movie this way than either of them. It's very rare that Mom and FZ agree 100% on how bad a movie is.

The Pacific Didn't get to see it until the last week or two. Been waiting two years. Not nearly as compelling as Band of Brothers, but not bad.

Superman doesn't come out until the 20th here but seeing it will be a priority- flying to the US June 26 for my sister's wedding June 29, so I'm thinking there won't be much time for the movies!

Really looking forward though, as I do love Superman. I just hope they don't screw it up.

I'm reading another history book, this one about the Plantagenet dynasty in England. After the part concerning King Henry II and his remarkable relationship with Thomas Becket, I decided to watch the 1960's movie Becket again. Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton in a classic.

I LOVE that movie!

Interstellar sucked. It was soooo bad. I want that three hours of my life back.

Interstellar is the best movie ever. People who say it sucked, suck.

I liked Interstellar. I mean I'm not saying it was the best movie I've ever seen, and could have been shorter, but otherwise I was entertained and that's what I wanted when going with a dozen astronomers on a Friday night.

Kinda funny how much some of the astro crowd can nitpick the physics when they forget how cool it is in the first place that we got accretion disks and relativity in a movie treated well though!

I might would have felt that way if it hadn't been three hours long... and if they hadn't decided they didn't know what to do with the story, so dropped our intrepid hero off at Saturn for no apparent reason, but after the first hour and a half, I got really bored, and then they randomly brought Matt Damon in for no other reason than to annoy us, and it just went downhill from there.

I read the plot and liked it, I'll find out how the movie is when it comes out on Cable.

Fisher and I watched Maleficent on Saturday... Wow... Just... Wow... this is NOT the Sleeping Beauty of my childhood... and Gods am I glad. Not for kids, really. Kind of dark. Really visual. Lana delRey’s version of “Someday My Prince Will Come”... will give you chills....

Just like here, I am hearing wildly varying reviews of Interstellar.
Case in point: two of the most respected people in my field--one currently with the Hayden Planetarium, one formerly. One hated it, the other loved it.

I've heard negative reviews from many people with enough science background to let bad science bother them and even ruin movies for them. But that was not the case here--it was the story. They were able to appreciate the attempt at being accurate, as well as the good visualizations. But without a good story, it's meaningless.

Speaking of movies, I can now say I am amongst the members of society who have watched The Godfather, which is to say pretty much everybody but me. I know, took me long enough!

Well I already knew that, and a lot of the other lines. I mean it really is one of those movies embedded in our culture.

Started Part II btw but ended at the Intermission. Will finish later. Part III isn't on Netflix here though, but I heard it's not as good anyway.

I confess btw part of it that I didn't really know I'd like as much as I do is how well it gets into the period, be it the 1910s at Ellis Island when he first comes over or 1950s in Cuba before the revolution. Really good at picking out typical for the time slices of life that aren't as recognizable today.

(Also, dumb question, but all the Italian parts aren't subtitled in my version, even when I turn on closed captioning. Is it supposed to be that way, or...? I kinda like it this way, but it seems unusual for an American movie.)

Did you do subtitles as well as captions?

That wasn't an option. Plus I 99% guarantee if it was, they would have been in Dutch.

English closed captioning just said [ITALIAN SPOKEN] and was thus not terribly useful.

Oh... of course. You're using Dutch Netflix. Their options would be different then here. I wonder if they've gotten to Australia yet.

My gods! That movie was awesome. I saw it on the plane - really cool because I had my own personal screen so it wasn't lame - and I just love it. I must own that movie. I love seeing Disney get that edgy.

I honestly, honestly believe that Angelina Jolie needs to win an Oscar for this role. I also think that will never happen, but it should!

Didn't you think the cutting off of her wings was akin to rape? Her acting in that scene had me in tears, which is really weird when you're on a plane where people can see you.
