Bummer of a movie. This sequel to Independence Day, which starred Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum (he returns to collect a paycheck for this one too), tries too hard to recreate the original and ends up failing miserably. And by recreate, I mean even specific scenes, like when Brent Spiner is slammed against the glass by the alien. It doesn't work and often is painful.

Bad acting, bad writing, bad basic story, bad science, bad intentions.

Bad movie.

That's consistent with the reviews I've heard, but thanks for saving me the movie ticket.

The only character I liked in the original "Independence Day" was Randy Quaid's

Boyfriend wanted to see it regardless, so we're going tonight. Already got the ticket, soooo...

Basically the only way he could convince me is by agreeing to see it while they're still showing it in the big Tuschinski theater, because I love that place so damn much.

Don't worry, he likes to travel too. (Speaking of FB persona and travels, if you go back to my weekend in Texel there a few weekends back, you'll see a picture of him.)

So yeah, I went and perhaps went in with lower standards than geonuc, but it fit exactly what I wanted, which was a summer popcorn movie. I mean, one that I was cool with heading out to the bathroom halfway because I was sure I wouldn't miss much, but still... and some of the space special effects were frankly quite awesome.

I thought the only movie worse at the time of the first one was Armageddon. So I could have imagined that this second one would suck a whole lot more. Thanks for verifying.

The only actor I cared about in the first one was Raphael Sbarge. He was my neighbor in New Haven CT. a long time ago. If you look close he's had small parts in a hundred movies and TV shows. We see him so often that even though Mrs. T has never met him, we'll be watching a show and she'll say, "Hey, isn't that Raphie?"

When the first one came out, a Marine buddy of mine was so pissed off when Smith called Connick Jr. (playing two Marines) "Soldier." He walked out of the movie.

If they actually managed to make a worse movie than Armageddon, it must have taken some work

Armageddon was so bad, that all the "artistic licenses" taken with how things actually work made it insufferable. Interstellar at least tried to be a bit more realistic. I actually liked it Gravity was ho-hum The only good part to Transformers was John Turturro's character

I find it fascinating how different we all are in our movie tastes. Some movies we all (or almost all) like. And others it's all over the map. I really liked the first ID 4 and all the Transformers movies. I also really like Armageddon. I totally agree with the consensus that Gravity was not all that great. I didn't bother to watch Interstellar in part because of the reviews I read here on FWIS.

Of course, I think part of it is that I generally enjoy action movies. I realize that in many cases action movies rely heavily on special effects and how much Sheznai they can blow up. Acting and Plots are optional in action movies. There are some action movies that seem to find a plot and good acting. But, judging from what most people seem to think it's rare.

I also am not adverse to the occasional post-apocalyptic movie where the hero or anti-hero trudges through to victory. The Postman or The Book of Eli are a couple that I truly like. I realize that YMMV.

It maybe that I am a product of the cold war and a major portion of my life and military career revolved around war gaming WWIII with the Chinese and the USSR being the principle bad guys. The world goes out with a whimper or a bang but mankind endures as long as he is pure of heart and cleaves to Truth, Justice, and the American Way!

Hey, I like action movies, even the bad ones, even the bad ones with Chuck Norris or Dolph Lundgren. And I don't mind the US Flag waving, hell I liked Captain America (the new version) with "the Star Spangled Man with a Plan", but I really REALLY disliked Armageddon. Because it made NASA look like a bunch of idiots. Coming to think about it, despite that the "Right Stuff" made von Braun look like an Asshole, I still liked it. Guess I'm weird that way

I have also noticed that how much some of us hate a movie depends on how badly they ignore immutable laws of science. Or how they frame certain things. For me it's usually almost all horror movies. I realize that there really are some people just as stupid as the victims are in horror movies. But, I think it insults my intelligence to make me watch every single person in a horror movie be totally stupid and two steps behind the monster, villain, or evil character right up until the end when the totally indestructible fiend trips on a chain saw and gets a fork in his eye and dies.

Really.... You found a bunch of dead bodies at the old summer camp but you are still gathered around a campfire roasting marshmallows and wondering where everyone is. Meanwhile you hear a noise in the bushes and Frank (a two bit actor whose career is just as dead as he soon will be) takes a broken flashlight and goes into the bushes to find out what the noises are about.

Frank might as well be wearing a t-shirt that says "NO I AM NOT THAT STUPID. BUT THE DIRECTOR PAID ME IN ADVANCE SO I COULD PAY MY RENT"

But, the one that really should be in every horror movie is the blonde bimbo (sometimes a redhead) who runs screaming through the entire movie and doesn't get slaughtered. Her T-shirt should say "I DON'T DIE BECAUSE I SLEPT WITH THE PRODUCER".

I really liked Armageddon as well. I enjoyed the first Independence Day. Fell asleep during Transformers. Why? Because I need a plot!!!

I think some of us don't like certain movies when the stupidity takes us out of it. Sometimes, you can get swept up in the drama and not notice the stupidity. That happens less since I've gotten married, because he points out the stupidity as we go along.

But some movies are so gigantically stupid, and people get upset if I don't like them. Unless they worked on the movie, this is absurd.

A friend of mine was the science advisor on Gravity, and no, he did not have a sense of humor about it when I pointed out the flaws in the movie.

Weird how some people take it as a personal insult if you don't like the same things they do.

I'm not going to get a divorce over the fact that my husband doesn't like Glee, but that's only because he's got a lot of good points that counteract that HUGE flaw.

There's not enough bandwith for me to try to explain all the reasons I don't like Armageddon. Luckily, I've made it to a place where I don't have to try to convince people to like what I like and I don't feel the strong urge to try to convince them to not like what I don't like.

I'm actually a little envious. I wish I could like some movies and enjoy them with others. But they just so totally suck to me that I cannot enjoy them at all and feel that it was a waste of resources and my time. Oh well.

I like movies such as Armageddon, Gravity, Independence Day, etc. To reiterate what I didn't like about this movie was it's failed attempt to essentially recreate the original without having the original's story, acting and well, everything. It tried to compensate by making things bigger.

Yep.

I hardly ever even go to the movies any more. I'm probably averaging about 3 a year.

I try to see the big, special-effects movies in the theater. Otherwise, Netflix.

Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime and Vudu are my friends.

And what's really awesome, is that when we move to the boat, we can stream all of them without eating into our data through T-Mobile, my other favorite large corporation.

I loved Gravity. I totally understand why people would hate it and respect that opinion, just like I hope they would respect mine!

And Glee--the many of the storylines are HORRIBLE but I LOVE the musical numbers.
(I mean really, Quinn goes into labor at their competition, they all run to the hospital during the final performance, she has the baby, and they are all back by the awards ceremony? Ok, maybe it didn't take place that quickly....)

Armageddon made me cry. In the sentimental way--not because it was horrible!

T-mobile.
They have a streaming service and unlimited download plan that's really cheap for a phone.
They also have a hotspot version that allows unlimited streaming from certain sites. It's called binge.
Services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu etc are all unlimited streaming.
I used it at the boat. Plus it gives you three months to use the data that is metered.
At $30 for 6 gig it's a bargain.
