Bohemian Rhapsody

Took Brite to see "Bohemian Rhapsody" as a "date night" thing on Friday. I thought it was a tres cool movie. A really good biopic about Freddy Mercury and Queen. It highlights their more successful albums. I am not a music buff and I really enjoyed the show. Word is that the critics hate it because the movie didn't do a deep dive into his sexuality. WTF? The movie made it very clear and dealt with the man's sexuality quite well. I think those idiot critics watched the movie with blindfolds and ear muffs on.

Brite, who is a music person, thoroughly enjoyed the movie.

Loved it, loved it, loved it. What I loved most is that it was about the music. They played full songs, including a set from Live Aid. If you are a fan of Queen, this is for you. Go see it in a theater with a great sound system.

I have more to say when I have more time.....

I'm happy for the positive feedback. I read some crushing reviews and was worried. We're looking forward to seeing it this week.

We saw it Saturday and really enjoyed it! Went the Imax route, which was totally worth it. I too don't get what the critics don't like- if you read the Rotten Tomatoes reviews they're awful about so many things like "the pacing was terrible!" but I never felt that. I figure critics just don't like having full songs played out and concerts being redone because they're slow and don't drive plot, but anyone who goes to a Queen movie expecting otherwise is in the wrong movie.

Songs aside, I have to say what I didn't appreciate because I totally missed it was man, Freddie Mercury had style! Definitely better than mine ever will be! It struck me that musicians are in fact forced to be much more straight laced now than they were a few decades ago, which bf agrees. Best we can figure is frankly in the 80s a lot of people didn't know doing XYZ was associated with being gay, and now everyone does and it's ok to be LGBTQ but not to not be LGBTQ and do things like be a wandering around stage in a leotard when you're not. Weird to think that music has gotten so straight laced.

Also, minor spoiler, but I started laughing when Freddie insults Brian May by saying "you would spend your time finishing a dissertation on the cosmos, which hardly anyone will read." THANKS FREDDIE I DON'T JUDGE YOUR LIFE CHOICES

Hollywood is run by the finance people now, and they have always been straight laced. As long as the money comes in, they don't care about the creativity.

See, I would argue that music is actually much more free now than it used to be. Used to be you had to get radio play, and be associated with a label, etc etc. Now, you have Spotify and YouTube and all sorts of other ways to get a platform which are by comparison are quite liberating.

I guess my point is if "the finance people" are running it, I certainly don't think it's a new development compared to Queen's heyday.

I had to laugh because Brian May did finish his degree in Astrophysics after Freddie died.

Well my other option is political correctness run amok, but y'all don't want to hear that. ;)

Comedians, musicians, film makers - they're all afraid of offending people, but art is meant to offend and make us think.

Also, random aside, I HATE auto tune.

Perhaps I should have clarified that I never read the critics reviews. I find that in general if the (paid) critics hate it then I will like a movie. Occasionally, if they actually like a movie I may think it's OK. :P

Loved it! Took me to some places I didn't know about the band and the man. I think the OP is correct, they did deal with some of Freddie's issues with out being obscene, or pornographic. It was quite clear what the man was going through. Mike Myers' scenes, Brilliant! A full circle. Go read his interviews about pressing to use "Bohemian Rhapsody" in Wayne's World when the producers wanted something like "Welcome to the Jungle." And then a couple of his lines in this movie, hilarious. To sum it up and stay away from spoilers: Any movie that can make me go back and like "Another One Bites the Dust," well it must be special. :P

i'd read the times review before I saw the film and was a bit concerned. really liked the film and wouldn't have minded more music. (and what's wrong with 'another one bites the dust', thumper?)

I'm not sure how much I cared for it back when it was released. Maybe I liked it a bit but had a general bucking of disco. Since then I've heard it so many many times repeated daily on every dinosaur rock station I've ever listened to that I didn't think I could stand to hear it one more time. But I enjoyed the depiction of its creation in the movie.

That song was my first introduction to Queen but I didn't even know it was them.

The only time in my entire lifetime that the Detroit Lions had any dream of winning the Super Bowl was 1980, when I was 4. This was their theme song. Their glory only lasted the first few weeks of the season. (4-0 start, finished 9-7). But apparently it was fun while it lasted!

This makes me happy!

It's not my favourite music overall, but I think Queen were the best "Rock" band of all time.

I can't wait to see it!

Nobody has a voice like Freddie. A couple years ago a video of an American Idol contestant signing "Somebody to Love" went viral as one of the best performances ever.....sure, it was good for AI. But if you've ever heard Freddie do it, you know it doesn't compare.

It was fun to learn what he attributed his great vocal range to. I won't spoil it.....you can definitely look it up, or probably even guess. But I had never heard that before.

Loved it. Rami Malek knocked it out of the park. And yeah, casting Mike Myers was brilliant.
