Oh dear. I hadn't been reading it lately, so had forgotten about the paywall.

Basically, the author pokes fun at certain... entrenched tropes in American Literature (the serious Capital-L kind). Think writers like John Updike and Jonathan Franzen, where it's mostly about middle aged, middle class white people living in suburbia and watching their marriages fail.

Interaction with animal(s) that is significant in a subtle way

Except for whales. How can it be a Great American Novel without pets or wildlife?
