I loved the Pumpkins back in college, my brain used their stuff as the soundtrack for most of Consider Phlebas. (Yes my brain is weird.)

Unfortunately, Billy Corgan is a transphobic New Age fuckwit, so my brain has relegated him to the same category as Wagner, i.e. uncomfortable to listen to by association. Le sigh.

Man, if I had a dollar for every time I've heard that phrase... :P
I wasn't a huge fan back when they were popular. Corgan is interviewed prominently in the Rush documentary "Beyond teh Lighted Stage." He speaks very eloquently of their personal impact and influence on him, of their influence on generations of fans, and how the industry finally had to take them seriously. I think he used the term "intelligencia." I really liked his contribution to the film.

Yeah, some guys are incredibly different in public vs. private settings. Or in Corgan's case, in settings he thinks are public vs. ones he thinks are private. (But they're really mostly public because he's a rock star.)

Looks like they're coming to Cbus in August. What's your recommendation, should we go?
:P

This is one of my least favorite bands. In some cases, I can't get past the lead singer's voice no matter the quality of the music behind him. His droning voice is like a moped screaming past me. That's not quite the right description, but I think you get it.

The other ones I hate are

Pavement--Steven Malkmus cannot sing on key. This is one of MrPi's favorites. I do have to admit they are a good band. He actually talked me in to going to a concert. The music washed out his voice for the most part, so it was tolerable. But that doesn't make me want to listen to them.

Morrissey/The Smiths. It's more the melodies than his voice. Most of his lines alternate between two notes, I think a 5th apart. So unoriginal, it's painful!
