Taken by surprise...

Was tooling up I-75 in Mom's minivan, hauling her up to Toledo to see nephew-in-jail.
She was knitting away in the shotgun seat, and I was listening to the radidio while
the electric foot (aka cruise control) handled the "no need to notice me, Officer" part of things.

Had an EZ-listening vintage rock station on, and something odd about the song kept nagging me --
"...I don't remember it sounding quite that way..."

And then I glanced over and discovered why it sounded unusual.
There was my 83 year old mother, knitting contentedly, singing "Time After Time" in harmony with Cyndi Lauper...

I didn't say a word...just concentrated on the horizon and kept on truckin'...

Mom was having fun.

Good.

83-year-old girls just wanna have fun...they've earned it...

Scary ain't it... when Cyndi Lauper, Kiss, Queen and Blue Oyster Cult (not to mention Iron Maiden, Adam Ant and the Dead Kennedys) are considered oldies....

Yes, indeed. It's great that your Mom is 83. Hope she has a whole bunch more birthdays. My Mom was 91 when she passed. My Dad 90. I miss both of them a great deal. Especially the telephone conversations we used to have after I retired and lived 200 miles away from them (actually, just her, Dad passed before I retired).

I sent this info to the brethren'n'sistern of the family, and naturally, the Legal Eagle hadda get snarky...

"...when she starts singing along with Van Halen, let me know..."

I knew there was a reason I stayed publicly related to him...

Dad went through a period in his 60's, before he retired (he's 75 going on 22) when he was really into car stereo competitions, drove a tricked out Honda CRX with a sound system that would make any 17 year old male green with envy and could thump harder than your average pile driver. He listened to (and really enjoyed) Def Leppard, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Metallica, Ice-T, and basically any music that you would expect someone a third of his age to enjoy. He's toned it down a bit in his later years, but still rides a Harley Dyna Low-Rider, with a very rumbly aftermarket exhaust/air cleaner setup, and drives a 2012 Nissan 370Z. He has a salt-water aquarium, and every couple of years builds himself a new computer with the latest and greatest components. When I grow up, I wanna be like him.

I love the fact that my kids like the Beatles, Genesis, Classic..

yes they have their own music, but when the oldies play in our kitchen they know all the words and every once in a while sam slides in beside me singing while we cook

I love those days.
