Holy FUCK that was insane...

Friend had her PhD defense/party last night in a rather nice place, rented an open space under a restaurant near my place. Except we were kicked out of there at 1am and everyone wanted to keep going- lots of Spanish people around, no way that party was going to end so soon- so when I was asked by some folks to move the after party to my place as it was so close I said yes (I'd cleaned up a bit earlier as I already knew folks were sleeping on my sofa).

Hosted the after party until 430am when we started kicking people out- nary a peep from the neighbor below, so I'm gonna buy him a nice bottle of wine as I can't believe he didn't hear it. Now on a little over 4 hours of sleep so will crash soon- funny thing is my apartment is pretty much just looking the same as it did before I cleaned it as I was having guests spend the night on my couch. Clearly it has a state of equilibrium as a default.

Definitely glad everyone had a good time. But also there is definitely nothing like 50 people unexpectedly descending on your house at 130am to make you rethink ever hosting a party again, at least until it's a few months later and it seems like a good idea.

Oh and final funny thought? My note in the aknowledgements section for said new PhD was "Rommie, you throw amazing parties!" :drink:

Not drunk, just tipsy, and happy cause omg actually went out on a first date with a good guy for a change!

It had been so long I confess when I planned to meet this one I more or less assumed I'd be out after a first drink or two at max (cause online dating is at large rather depressing) but wow, guy was cute at first sight. Hell, and wearing a SUIT. And we chatted for several hours without stopping over drinks and dinner over science and philosophy and all in between- score!

It might sound like I have low standards or something strange... but it's been so long that I unquestionably wanted to see someone at the second date, and nothing that's a red flag that I can think of, that it's just really nice to be excited and hope to see someone again soon. :D

That guy doesn't sound like "low standards" to me. Quite the opposite. Good luck. :)

So it's been a week, and you're sober - any word on a second date?

Second date happened less than 24 hours after the first, actually. Won't say much more yet because I don't want to spoil it. :)

I'm not drunk and I watched this video sober, but the person telling the joke is drunk, and it's still pretty damn funny.

Not drunk, but certainly tipsy- at work until 930 last night, had the radio show earlier, then a few hours work, then a friend doing his PhD defense, so by the time his reception started at 230 I was definitely going for the wine!

Now 530, break to rehydrate before the party tonight.

Btw nice sunny day and friend has a lot of single non-astronomer buddies, so decided to be ambitious and put on a really nice dress (A-frame, black and white polka dots). One of those ones where a girl keeps checking her skirt because so many people stare at you you get paranoid your dress got caught and your panties are showing or similar... ANYWAY odd thing about astronomy these days is no one will compliment the dress, or acknowledge it in any way, even though you know it's a knockout. A guy friend will tell me a few days later I looked great, but not then. I feel like we're definitely in the extremes of political correctness these days, and the pendulum needs to swing back a bit before academia can appreciate such a dress.

When I was a grad student and would wear a skirt or a dress I would get asked "Why are you so dressed up?"
And I had a professor once apologize for being "overdressed" for a Cosmology class, wearing a jacket and tie with jeans. He said he had to meet with university administrators later.

We're just not expected to get all fancied up! It shocks people when we do.

And, in memory of Russ, this post is useless without pictures.

How did you get out of the house in that dress? You should go home and change into something decent. And when did you get all grown up looking????

there.... that should make you feel like family. ;)

So today marks somewhat of a celebration. We are on day 5 in our new house. And I am also starting my new job with the Veteran's administration in about 5 days. Oh, and it's been 5 months since Brite and I foolishly agreed to raise another child.

So, the boy is in bed and I don't have to be to work in the morning. I have a small amount of Jim Beam left to finish off. Yes, I know. But the JB was seriously on sale when I bought it six month or more ago. ;) And technically it is a tad bit smoother than JD. Some ice, a slice of lime, fill a tall glass about half full of good whiskey, a splash of cola ( I prefer coke or diet coke) and you are ready to post in the What's Up I'm Getting Drunk Thread.

Now that Sherry is back, I suppose it's a matter of time before the blue fuzzball shows up to.
