LINKS

Just what it looks like...

LINKS

Postby Swift » Thu May 01, 2014 9:04 pm

I note that quite frequently people will post links to videos or websites without a quote from the content, or even an indication of what the content is.

I find this particularly annoying when it is the OP of the thread. So I'll see a post that is entirely something like this:

Wow, this is really terrible, you have to watch

I can hover my cursor over the link to at least determine the website, but invariable it is a Youtube video (which I can't watch at work) or some glacially slow to load blog or newsfeed. So I can't even determine if the content is something worth coming back to when I'm home and have the time and permission to watch or read.

I'm not asking for a rule, but I think it would be nice if people included a little more information. Thanks,

Will do, Swift. Would something like this work?

Hey, look at this! (CBC News Article)

And this, too! (YouTube)

Or are you asking for more description in the url text itself?

McGeorge Bundy dancing on a roof. (YouTube)

Edit: Oh, rereading your post, I think I see what you're saying. When I'm commenting on a bit of news, I like to pull up a news article, excerpt the relevant bit in the post, and provide a link back to the source. Is that good?

More about the content then the source (which I can figure out from hovering the cursor over the link). For example

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-27249055
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is starting a 30-day treatment course, as police investigate a new video that allegedly shows him smoking crack cocaine.

His lawyer told the Associated Press that Mr Ford had boarded a plane to Chicago for a treatment programme.

Or for a video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xOxHyTP91c
(the band Carolina Chocolate Drops playing "Cornbread and Butterbeans" - fantastic)

My problem isn't in a post where someone is already talking about something (Rob Ford) and they post a link. My problem is posts where all the post contains is a link and something along the lines of "Look at this" or "Isn't Greenland terrific" but no real explanation.

Gotcha. I'll make sure not to do that, then.

As the most recent "offender" I must say I resent that and that you're simply hiding your racist attitude against Latin Americans with this excuse. Therefore I will hold my breath till I turn blue and wait for an apology and immediately afterwards I'll tell on you at the LatinAmerican-American Defense League. VIVA LA RAZA :P

I don't mind Latin Americans but I hate blue people.

This posts does exactly what you are complaining about, but at least it refers to Blue People.

I linked to it because you might appreciate the old sci-fi comic book setting of the picture :)
