One has to ask one's self what sort of person would want to believe a doctrine like that. I can see preaching it but not believing it (Jerry Falwell and his ilk) or believing it and hating it (Philip K. Dick went there at at times). I can even see believing in it and thinking it's just the way of things, from lack of empathy or lack of critical thought. I just can't imagine believing in it, and not thinking in your heart of hearts once in a while, "You know, this really isn't right." Don't these people have any doubt?
... But of course I already know the answer, from when I read Inferno. They do have doubt. They're just trained from an early age to stomp on it at every turn, the way Virgil persuades Dante to ignore his sympathy for the damned.
Still, I have a hard time wrapping my head around it.
