I don't know, but more studies in this arena might give us some insight into the way some people hallucinate and/or have delusions. Maybe they just have eye - brain communication issues.

Fascinating how they did image recognition on your eyes to tell when they have moved from the cross and make the faces normal again.

Look at the cross in the middle of the pictures and use your peripheral vision to see the other faces.
They will appear highly distorted, almost cartoonish versions of the original faces.
If you look directly at the individual pictures they look normal.
