What color?

Postby Rommie » Fri Feb 27, 2015 11:36 am

I figure if the rest of the Internet is arguing over the color of this dress we should do a quick poll here too. :P

(Btw I totally get how lighting matters and what color it likely is, but I'm still amazed at how my color perception truly can't see the "other" answer!)

I see it as one way.

I showed MrPi the picture without any introduction, and he sees it the other way.

Freaks me out. How can what one person sees as a light gold be seen by another person as black? :scream:

I saved and printed out the pic from Rommie's site.
I took a picture of it next to the image on my monitor--they look almost exactly the same except the one on the monitor is a bit darker overall.
Then I took a pic of the printout with a black pen on it.
If there is anyone here who sees black, not gold....how does the black of the pen compare with the black of the dress?

What color do you see this font? It's the color I see the lace.

I see gold, both the font and the lace.

White and gold. Possibly blue and gold. No black anywhere, unless the lighting is very weird indeed.

It's definitely a blue and black dress. That's not the question. The question is why do some people see the blue and black and some people see white and gold. My husband and I did an experiment. If your eyes are more dilated, you will see it one way, and if they are less dilated, you'll see it another way. We both saw white and gold initially. Without changing anything but our location, we were able to see it as blue and black. We took it outside, and when our pupils shrunk, it became blue and black. This would explain why different people are seeing it different ways.

The thing that has people so fascinated is that two people can be looking at the exact same monitor, in the same lighting, and still see two different things.

The thing that annoys me so much is that CNN Headline News (only one of many examples) spent more time on this nonsense than the inability of Congress to fund the Department of Homeland Security this morning.

That is most definitely worthy of your annoyance. Just because something goes viral on the Internet, doesn't mean it should be covered in the news. That's just dumb.

Coming very late to the discussion. I see gold and white. But the only interesting thing about this was an article I read where a neuroscientist was speculating that color perception may be genetic. So then I started wondering--if you and I both say that an object is red, how can we be sure that we're actually seeing the same color? Maybe we are just giving it the same name but one of us sees blue. Anyway, enough useless speculation for one day.....
