Code Monkey... were you always a peace maker? Or did it come to you gradually as you grew in wisdom? ;)

no, fisher, I've never seen myself as a peacemaker. it's just that so much anger(and worse) can be traced to misunderstanding. I don't like conflict and I don't like to see people feeling bad. when I see a misunderstanding about to spiral out of control I try to explain.

sigma, you're absolutely correct; I am not a pacemaker. I am curious about something that you said earlier. you are familiar with the classical ariel and caliban but not prospero?

Even if the conflict is bogus :)

I've never seen "The Tempest". I knew about Ariel and Caliban, because of Rodó's piece. Later, I found out that they were characters from that play. I watched an episode of "The Librarians" where Prospero was the bad guy. THEN I discovered he was also a character from "The Tempest".

What can I say, sometimes watching TV actually makes you learn :)

sigma, it was so clear that your feelings were badly hurt - all due to a misunderstanding - that it just wasn't possible for me to sit idly by. you were in such pain. I had to explain why fisher was right.

read or see the play. i'm going to find rodo's essay and read it.

i'm still not a pacemaker. nor a trend-setter.

So, just to be clear, are you paying 5¢ per gallon, or 5¢ per liter, for gasoline? Or is it five fuertes?

Not exactly none of the above.

First of all, we have something like three official exchange rates plus the black market rate.

At the least favorable official rate (6,3 Bs per US$) we're paying 1.5 US cents per liter or 5.6 US cents per US Gallon. At the black market rate (these days it's about 838 Bs per US$) we're paying 0.012 US cents per liter or 0.044 US cents per US Gallon.

The "five fuertes" thing makes it even more ambiguous, in the old days a "Fuerte" was a 5 Bolivares Coin. In 2007 our glorious socialist idiots had to "revalue" our currency (since it had devalued so much) and dubbed the new currency "Bolivar Fuerte" (Strong Bolivar) which was worth 1000 old Bolivares.

Why is it ambiguous? I fill my Gas tank with 5 Bolivares Fuertes.

the price for a single item doesn't convey much. what are typical wages and what are the prices for other necessities? (we'll stipulate, for the sake of argument, that the cars get reasonable mileage.)

Mr. Mono, grapes asks because it's well known that the price of gasoline in this country is insanely low, and subsidized by the government who has to IMPORT a third of the gasoline we consume because our refineries are in shambles. Just another example of the distortions of our economy.

Oh stop your whining.
We have farmers begging for food in Oregon and the government turns off their power so they have to cuddle up together...ok sure, they liked that part but they want some food too.
Thanks for all the fish.

Well, what do you know, our precious revolutionary idiots finally deigned to publish some inflation figures

According to them, Inflation was 141% on the third quarter last year.

And the Moral of the story is:

If you let LEFT wing nutjobs do whatever they want you get inflation (Surprise!)

if you let RIGHT wing nutjobs do whatever they want you get unemployment (SURPRISE AGAIN!)

Wow, Call Guinness [The Sewer Rat and Nicky are playing RealPolitik

When the rift becomes impossible to hide, you know that the Russians have played their hand well. Maduro has made it clear that this Diosdado isn’t the “don’t mess with me” bully anymore, and is helping tear down the myth surrounding the figure who, until just last month, we all figured was really running Venezuela behind the scenes.

Not bad for a bus driver.

I still can't believe the folks at Caracas Chronicles actually wrote that.
