This is about as typically Venezuelan as it comes

Apparently, an Spanish Ex-Prime Minister: José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero was trying to mediate between Nicky and the opposition regarding the referendum. it's said that the deal was:

Agreeing to free political prisoners

A reform to expand the Supreme Tribunal’s Constitutional Chamber from seven magistrates to fifteen, with the opposition appointing seven new magistrates, and an eighth being agreed between the two sides.

And all this in exchange for the opposition to stop demanding a referendum.

Capriles-Radonski, the closest thing the opposition has to a leader, told Zapatero to go fuck himself, so guess what Zapatero did? he went to visit Leopoldo Lopez in prison to show him the deal. Lopez's response was the same as Capriles, even better:

Since the deal didn’t have unanimous MUD support, Rodríguez Zapatero then sought to leverage Leopoldo López’s blessing, turning up in his cell in Ramo Verde alongside Jorge Rodríguez. López refused to talk to Zapatero in Rodríguez’s presence. One on one with the former Spanish Prime Minister, he backed Capriles’s position, ending any possibility of a deal.

Our understanding was that Leopoldo’s rejection of Zapatero’s proposal was categorical, telling him he’d rather be the last political prisoner to come out of jail instead of bargaining a 2016 constitutional change of government. As Zapatero was leaving, Jorge Rodriguez skulked around to Leopoldo’s cell.

I still think Leopoldo Lopez is an idiot. As for Capriles, I'm ambivalent about him. But I think that this time, they made the right call. After all:

A) There AREN'T supposed to be any political prisoners, right? RIGHT?

B) "A more balanced Supreme Court"? Last December there was an election and the opposition won a super-majority at the National Assembly, The government did everything it could to curtail the Assembly's power. So, why exactly should the government be trusted?

What's so typically Venezuelan? the deal proposal is laughable, that's what passes for negotiations around here. If all Zapatero could get from the government was that, it's obvious Nicky won't budge either. OTOH the fact that they agreed to negotiate at all means that they don't have the full support of the Military.

Ah, I see the plan: no more lines at the shops, means no shortages, and people quietly starving at home, means no chaos in the streets.

Of course, as the writer points out, the holes in the plan are large enough to let the Titanic through... snoot:

You are giving them too much credit, they are stupid enough to think it's a solution. It's not the first time the government has tried to distribute food directly. It tried to do so a few years ago because they claimed that the private distribution chain was full of speculators. And it used the logistics provided by the state oil company (PDVSA, which up till 10 years ago was about the only part of the government that actually did something useful.) It was a major disaster.

The really pathetic part is that the government has expropriated a lot of companies that produced food. None of them produce virtually anything these days, the bulk of the food production is still generated by the private sector.

Just read an article about how there were 50 riots in the past week alone if not more because 87% of Venezuelans say they can't afford food.

Sigma, are you holding up ok? Serious question, because if you're not I want you to let us know how to help. Lest there be any doubt.

Well that's quite a higher number of riots than what we get from the news. (Not surprising),

How am I holding up? Meh, at least I can still put food on the table.

I am sorry to be blunt Rommie, but until this breaks down (because by the looks of it, this time I agree with what the international press is saying) and one is able to claim refugee status, there is NOTHING to be done. Job opportunities abroad (from companies that could actually help me sort out immigration hurdles) for people my age are virtually non existent. And immigration policies in most developed countries are geared towards harvesting people in their 30s. Job opportunities in Latin America are pretty much the same, they want DEVELOPERS (not Sysadmins) in their late 20s, mid 30s. So, while I appreciate the good wishes, there's really nothing that can be done.

I know. :( But seriously, if that ever changes, or if you need something and there's a way to get it to you (I know the latter is a big problem too), let us know.

Yes, Maracaibo is the second largest city in the country, good thing (for me that is) I live 600 Km away from it.

The riots mentioned by Rommie happened on Cumana, the capital of the state of Sucre, on the other side of the country. Caracas is between those two cities. While there has been rioting and ransacking here, it has been limited. But I seriously think it's just a matter of time before riots of that magnitude become common here.

I have no idea. It's been building up for a while and you seemed to be aware of the badness.
I guess I was hoping that in some way you might have had an opportunity to prepare something.
Make a pea shooter with poison darts?
Learn which weeds are edible and what goes with certain meats.
Study the best way to serve man...that kind of thing.
Thanks for all the fish.
