I got a couple of possibilities to get a visa, both are rather iffy. As usual, being born in a Banana Republic and my age work against me.

Yes. As much as I'd like to see all the people of Venezuela free from all this shit, it's you I'm concerned about.

Yes. We can’t just see if we can pass the plate and sponsor you for a visa until you get a job or something, right Sigma? Maybe it’s too absurd an amount, but I dunno, just thinking.

The problem Rommie, is that (from I have seen) immigration services make sponsors jump through a lot of hoops, some of them quite hard if you're not part of a large organization.

I'd have to ask a US immigration Lawyer to see if I have any possibilities, although with all the current hysteria in your government about immigration, It doesn't look good. That US Diversity visa lottery thing your current WH occupant has been raging about? I've applied to it 5 times (including this year's) . Have never been selected. I working on my two possibilities, if I find I need any help with those, I will sure let you guys know.

In the meantime, Nicky managed to buy himself sometime. He just made a large bond payment that was supposed to be made last thursday his little stunt from last week rattled bondholders so much that they'e asking an internationa organism (which up til today I didn't know it existed: the ISDA ) if they can consider Venezuela in default for being late in the payment.

According to the Credit Rating Agency Standard & Poor's we're on "Selective Default" whatever that means. One thing is certain. The fabled Nov. 13 Meeting was a bust

The actions from the ratings companies came after an odd spectacle in Caracas, where bond investors who made the trek found a red-carpet welcome, an honor guard salute and gift bags stuffed with state-produced chocolate and coffee. Fewer than 100 creditors showed up at the downtown Caracas office building, and at least one hightailed it out after realizing that two government officials sanctioned by the U.S. were in attendance, fearful of violating rules governing interactions with them.

He didn’t miss much. Very little was announced and nothing was resolved, according to attendees who said they left just as confused about the government’s intentions as they were going in. Vice President Tareck El Aissami was the only official to speak, and devoted most of his prepared remarks to railing against Donald Trump and global financiers who he said have conspired to keep the country from making debt payments on time. He pledged the nation would continue to honor its obligations and work with bondholders to find new ways to get them their money, but offered no concrete proposals for restructuring.

In the meantime, the good ship Titanic continues to sink.

Nicky was pretty happy this morning. The Russkies (Predictably) accepted to refinance the debt we have with them, you know, that debt where we had to offer 49.9% of Citgo as collateral.

Unfortunately The ISDA rained on his parade we're officially on default.

So turns out that with the country LITERALLY falling apart, Hyperinflation raging and people starving we still have people arguing on how many angels can fit on on the head of a pin

I have no sympathy at all for the opposition in my country. I am of the opinion that their stupidity bought Chavez and his boys at least five years more than they would have gotten otherwise. HOWEVER they're the only game in town. If we're to get rid of Maduro and his Narco-buddies, there's nobody else.

So after all the whining on the comment section someone wrote this:

Such as it is, I think the situation can be summarized as follows:

A) The country is so broke that Maduro & Co. Can’t pay the bills and take their graft too (as the last two years have shown. those two have much higher priority than importing food and medicine).

B) The Chinese and the Russkies will NOT give us more money. Why not? they would have done it already. The Chinese just said they are “confident” we’ll be able to deal with the current situation. The Russians refinanced a US$ 3.15 Billion loan They will happily obstruct anything the US, Canada or the EU attempt at the UN Security Council. But as to give us any fresh money? hard to believe. If they were willing and/or able to do it, they would have done it already

C) The sanctions set by the US & Co do not allow Maduro or any his cronies to refinance the debt, the only way around that seems to have the AN on board

D) There’s been talk that bondholders will not force an acceleration and try to confiscate any assets owned by Venezuela or PDVSA because it’s going to be a messy default and they have hope that they’ll get payed, even if they’re late payments. Well, Maduro can show all the willingness to pay he wants. But the ability for Venezuela to pay is becoming more questionable every week. SO, I find it hard to believe that there will be no acceleration in the near future.

E) Any refinancing deal will require a radical change in our country’s current economic policies. MOST PROBABLY will also require the assistance of our favorite “Imperialist Organization” (i.e. The IMF)

F) It’s very hard to believe that the Maduro Government will implement the changes required by E)

Based on the above. Plus (for whatever is worth) international pressure. I think that Maduro has no choice but to negotiate with the MUD. He (or any Chavista for that matter) of course would never admit to that, but I think that at most, with the Russian refinancing, he has three or four months before entering a messy default.

This leads me to think that the MUD’s position ought to be:

Non-Negotiable: Elections supervised by international observers by March 2018

What can the MUD negotiate with Maduro?

– Who’d get amnesty: Padrino Lopez and his top Generals most probably

– Who goes to Cuba: Maduro, Diosdado, Delcy Rodriguez, etc.

– Whether the PSUV gets to field a candidate for the March 2018 Elections

The first point HAS to be non negotiable, let’s assume that the MUD is as spineless as it’s supposed to be and decides to accept CNE supervised elections in December 2018 (which is of course, what Maduro would accept at most). Furthermore, let’s say the AN is on board with this. Hell, let’s say the US actually accepts that and allows Venezuela to enter the necessary deals to refinance its debts. Well, I suspect it would still be a non starter. The IMF won’t be on board because there are no guarantees Maduro will actually do the required changes in Economic policy. And, in turn, bondholders can simply say that if the IMF is not on board they see no reason to refinance, Game Over, we default in April.

You can discuss the morality of amnesty to the Military or Chavistas all you want. or if you will accept the Chavistas participating in the next presidential elections But the Chavistas HAVE to leave, otherwise it's game over. If we have a messy default (which IMHO it's a 100% certainty if Maduro and his boys remain in power) The government will NOT be able to use subsidies to force the people in the slums to support them. As it is it's amazing that we haven't have a repeat of the 1988 riots (no Virginia, the recent ones were not even a pale copy, back in 1988 we had martial law and curfews) Which leads me to think that the people currently in power had a hand in those 1988 riots (IIRC several left wing ex-guerrillas were jailed, right after those). This leads me to think that the real collapse will happen early next year if Maduro doesn't leave.

A week ago when this started and I bitched about it, people would tell me that it was more of the same, that Maduro would find a way to pay and things would stay their usual crummy way (after all, this train wreck has been going on for three years already). Now that it became clear the kind of crap that is coming, I see people behaving like the Third Class Passengers in the Titanic while it was sinking,

I still don't like CNN, but I sure like this piece

Venezuela plans its own version of bitcoin as debt crisis worsens

With soaring inflation, Maduro promised a year ago to print bills of bolivars with higher denominations to try to alleviate Venezuelans' financial pain somewhat. But there was such high demand for them upon arrival that cash shortages persisted. Venezuelans queue up daily outside ATMs, sometimes for over an hour. The maximum that can be withdrawn from an ATM in Venezuela is 30,000 bolivars (about 30 U.S. cents).

This is wrong. the limit is 10,000 bolivars (yup, a DIME)

HOWEVER

Maduro is known to make sweeping statements that are met with applause but don't produce any tangible results. In September, he announced a plan to give rabbits to families suffering from food shortages in order to help address widespread hunger.

So far, no further news of the "rabbit plan" has emerged.

At least someone said it. it did fail to mention that is met with applause when he makes his "sweeping statements" on his weekly show.....

Well the situation hasn't gotten any worse.... yet

We had a 5 hour blackout in several parts of the country (yes, including here at home) on Monday. Barely made the news. The Government as usual blamed it on "Sabotage", it felt almost like an afterthought. The idiot in charge of the Electric Power Authority said a high tension wire had exploded and then Maduro came out saying is was an act of sabotage ordered by (guess who?) the US. THEN the idiot a the EPA said they had found a device used to damage the cable and several others and that there was a someone in police custody. International news didn't even bother with that one.

Apparently inflation was 2000% this year. At this point the actual number makes little difference, we're in Hyper-Inflation

As for the so called negotiation between the Government and the Opposition, they met on Dec 15 and came out very tight lipped saying they'll meet again on Jan 12. Rumors say they're close to an agreement. I frankly doubt it. Some of the opposition (including Antonio Ledezma, a Mayor that was a political prisoner, kept confined to his home and recently escaped) say that if they agree to legitimize that crazy Constitutional Assembly the oposition might as well shoot itself on the head. In the meantime Numero Dos came out saying that there's nothing to negotiate and the the "right wing" will NEVER get back in power. I still say that any agreement where the current government stays in power is a waste of time. We'll collapse in April. As you can imagine, unrest is brewing again. And I suspect that THIS time there will really be full-scale riots like the ones from 1988.
