The world just got a bit dumber. Heard this on the way in this morning. When diagnosed in the mid '60's, he was given 2 years to live.
Look for the Helpers. You will always find people who are helping.

The Motor Neurone Disease Association, of which Prof Hawking had been a patron since 2008, reported that its website had crashed because of an influx of donations to the charity.

ALS is a MND, and I think he had ALS, right?

I believe he did have ALS. Which is what made his longevity all the more remarkable. If you make it 5 years with ALS it's a miracle. I have no idea what to call it when you make it over 50 years with ALS. :shock:

I heard once he's the longest surviving person after being diagnosed. Probably just pure random luck.

Btw for those interested in one of the most interesting obituaries I've read in awhile, Roger Penrose wrote one for Hawking- https://www.theguardian.com/science/201 ... g-obituary Worth a read if you want to know about his science from one of his longest-standing collaborators.
