Court rules conversion therapy bans unconstitutional

This is... really horrifying. I know several trans people who have been through conversion therapy, it is literally torture. A lot of times they point blank tell kids that, if they can't become straight, they should just kill themselves. Just from what I've seen at a distance, the level of harm it inflicts on people is absolutely unreal.

It should be considered a crime.

Even if gender orientation was a choice (and by know it's well established that it isn't) I think it'd still ought to be outlawed.

I notice that a lot of these shit hole country type of decisions involve the first amendment.

Yup, they treat "freedom of speech" the same way that schoolyard bullies treat the words "It's a free country!"

The entire right wing in the US is basically just like

literally beating someone to death with a broom handle "This is the USA, we have a thing called freedom here! I can do whatever I want!"

The case link at that tweat led me to this on page 8: "Two laws held unconstitutional, by the Supreme Court and this Court, respectively, provide useful examples: a federal statute that prohibited the sale and possession of videos depicting animal cruelty, ..." citing United States v. Stevens, 559 U.S. 460, 464 (2010).

Didn't that recent accounting of Trump's big accomplishments (which mostly consisted of signing off popular laws, or taking credit for things that were already in the pipeline) mention a law that Trump signed making it a federal felony to produce animal snuff videos?

I'll have to look into this deeper.

Wow. I haven't dug into this but uh... have to say it kind of alarms me that anyone is dragging in animal rights stuff for an argument about the rights of gay and trans human children.

I believe that the winning argument in a case involving child abuse involved pointing to anti-animal cruelty laws.

@cm

I've been trying to get in touch with him literally for years, miss him like hell. He's always been terrible at getting back to me, IDK. I know he's okay though, he's active elsewhere on the Internet more recently.

Ran into him like ~3 years ago in Ottawa. Was a lot happier once he was at his hometown and out of law school, and was going to start a job at a law library or some such which sounded like a great fit. Haven't chatted recently though.
Yes, I have a life. It's quite different from yours.
