The Weather Thread

Since we got back from Europe, the weather definitely officially became winter- fog, some rain, just a few degrees above freezing. Well, it's December, who was expecting good weather?

The funny one is all my colder weather jackets are missing- they were presumably packed in a box in July and are still one of the unopened ones in our garage. Thankfully, there was my very old ski jacket already unpacked, so not going freezing, but it's a bit of a high priority to find that particular box right now.

Amazon is your friend.

Actually, got rid of Amazon! The main reason to have it was for the same day/ next day delivery in Boston (which was a godsend with a new baby), but they don't have that here. So I got Target 360 instead, if it's in the store here they'll actually deliver it same day.

Either way the good news is the jacket was found (I am sure you were on pins and needles waiting to hear about it). After the rainiest December on record for some time (Crater Lake apparently has more snow than it did since the 1950s!), it hasn't rained much at all TBH. Last week though we got our first inversion, where the fog and cold air gets trapped in the valley- barely gets above freezing, and nonstop mist. So that was the first time it actually felt like winter around here- now it's blown out though, so we have a ton of sunshine. Overall Oregon winter still is better.

Anyway, it was 1F both mornings this week. But did make it into double digits. Tomorrow it could get as low as -8 before a warming trend heading into the weekend. I can hang out with the dog in it close to the house for an hour or two. But when we get up to the road and the wind, I either need more clothes or a little less exposure time. I am loving my new boots Mrs. T got me for XMas.

Indeed, never saw snow sticks quite as high for the plows as going on US-20 over the mountain pass. Really is a diverse place.

We still baretly have any snow on the ground but had a "cold day" yesterday with windchills at almost -40F!

Yikes, they closed all schools around here TUE-WED (Mon was a holiday) for wind chills at -5 - -10. I think most schools were open today. Going up to 20...

The big thaw is in effect and huge rainfall projections for Friday, so that and the melted snow will make for mud and flood...
It's funny though, what you get used to. Last week the temp went up 12 degrees in the morning from the time I woke up. It was still +6F. Lot's of clothes to put on before going outside.

I walk the dog every morning soon after I get up. This morning, I looked at the temp: 34F I thought, I don't even need to put on a jacket to go out.

First snow day in Oregon! We got about an inch of snow, and a tiny crust of ice on top- so little it's not even slippery and just makes the leaves shiny, but enough that after last year's giant storm everyone freaked out so schools etc are canceled. So the golf course next to us has turned into a winter wonderland with all the kids sledding all over it, cross country skiers, etc... took the babe down and she was just mesmerized by it all.

So yeah, happy we do get a LITTLE snow after all. Takes my mind off all the other dumpster fires going on right now.

I remember Buffalo snow! It was always over my head. Of course I was 4.
Big thaw in effect here. Only a couple patches of snow left. Lots of mud and spongy ground. And a really dirty dog.

24 degrees Monday, 68 degrees yesterday, temps dropping down to 30 tonight with a chance of ice and snow.

Snow day....at least 5" overnight, still snowing and windy. Metro bus service is suspended. Schools are closed. My work is closed; we're part of a University that isn't closed. The U did send out an email that both city and campus buses are not running....nice way to tell people that you still have to to go class but there is no way to get there. I hope most professors are sensible and have called off their classes or switched online.

In contrast, it's crazy how much earlier spring happens here! I mean yes, I know it's March already, but it sure feels earlier- we hit the 50s consistently (even upper 60s last week!), daffodils are in full bloom, starting to see the first cherry trees. It's pretty fun to have a new house btw, where you don't know what's planted- I keep being like oh cool we have quite a few hellebores, who knew.

Indeed, 200" and counting at Willamette Pass ski area, 1.5 hours from us! (Saw a report that Crater Lake has a record year for example, and the most snow since the 1950s.) I've only made it up there once this year because of obvious reasons, but at this rate they're saying we can likely make it to May so I'm sure it can happen another time.

Also, I'm sure climate change is also somewhat to blame here, but frankly the rain has not been that bad compared to what people say to you. My theory is that Californians come up and are just shocked that it rains at all.

Well, most of the snow is gone but we are still a bit chilly with temperatures around 20 degrees F. most of the day. Slowly edging up to the 30’s. Winter is like “Bro, I have until at least March 21st officially”.
