Good and Bad News

Postby SciFiFisher » Wed Dec 10, 2014 4:49 am

I had a plan for the remaining 3 years or so in the army reserve. Find a quiet out of the way place to slide quietly into the retired from the army life...

And then I got the email this morning telling me I have been selected to be the commander of a Medical Support Unit. In essence I will assume command of a battalion sized group in April 2015. Depending on the mission and the subordinate units I may be in charge of I will be the commander of approximately 300 to 600 reserve soldiers.

I have been alternating between OMG! and OMFG! all day.

Mind you. I feel like I am qualified for the job. But, a wee voice does wonder if I beat out the competition or if there was a lack of competition. :P

Not a promotion. More a position that goes with my current rank. The terrific perks include more responsibility, some authority, and I finally get my own staff team.

I always fancied myself as more like Stonewall Jackson. Except for the part where he got shot by his own picket. :P

In the spring of 1851,[20] Jackson accepted a newly created teaching position at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), in Lexington, Virginia. He became Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy and Instructor of Artillery. Parts of Jackson's curriculum are still taught at VMI, regarded as timeless military essentials: discipline, mobility, assessing the enemy's strength and intentions while attempting to conceal your own, and the efficiency of artillery combined with an infantry assault.

While he was eccentric in many ways he was also a gifted tactical commander.

Actually, I've thought for quite some time that strange women, lying in ponds, distributing swords, might actually be a fine basis for a system of government.

Certainly you would expect rigorous laws enforcing clean water and wetlands preservation.

You can lead a horse to frozen water but you can't make him play hockey.

So, it's official. This last week-end I assumed command of a nice little medical unit in Riverside CA. It's reserve duty only which means one week-end a month and the occasional 2 weeks of annual training. We had a nice little change of command ceremony. So much for reading the newspaper in a corner of the drill hall every month. :P

My first official order was to reaffirm the right of the army to torture people every 6 months in the form of a physical fitness test. :P

I don't have much in the way of pictures. Hard to take pictures and participate at the same time. ;)
