I love it for the responses.

“Do you ACTUALLY believe we evolved from monkeys?”

"Do you actually believe we came from a magic rib?"

Although somewhat non-responsive, #1 most clearly illustrates the atheist/religious divide to me.

Q: How can atheists even have morals?
A: Because if you need God to stop you from murdering someone, then you have a SERIOUS problem.

Ah... ah... ah... CHO!!!

God bless you.

whack:

I'm being funny, but I do know some atheists that get worked up over someone saying "God bless you" to them.

I don't care when they do. I just always say geshunheit.

I find it funny when people I know are atheists say God bless you.

Why do we still comment after a sneeze? We don't do it for other gaseous body hole expulsions. (Coughs, farts, burps, hiccups.) What makes a sneeze so special? People who say it have common sense not to believe that "a person's soul could be thrown from their body when they sneezed, that sneezing otherwise opened the body to invasion by the Devil or evil spirits, or that sneezing was the body's effort to force out an invading evil presence...[so saying] "God bless you" or "bless you" is used as a sort of shield against evil."

I don't get worked up but this one does annoy me, particularly with multi-sneeze events. If the blessing didn't work the first time, can't we all just assume the sneezer is an agent of the devil and let it go at that?

When someone lets off a good sneeze, I usually respond with, "Good one!"

cultural training. wash your hands, wipe your nose with the kleenex (not your sleeve), say please, thank you, and bless you when someone sneezes. :P

In my experience, most people do only the latter!

12. “Don’t you want to believe….just in case?”

Dad was the deacon of the neighborhood Catholoic church.
On a chain around his neck, he had a cross, a crescent, and a Star of David.
Someone asked him once why he wore all three.

His reply?

"Just coverin' all the bases..."

Dad had no problem with my lack of "organized" theology.
We had some of the most interesting discussions on religious subjects...

It's hard for people to who believe in a god to understand why someone won't or cannot believe. And just to prove that the universe has a twisted sense of humor... It's hard for those who don't believe in a god to understand why someone can and does believe. :P

IIRC, the expression "bless you" after someone sneezes came from a a sickness that was killing a large segment of the population and one of the symptoms was sneezing. Basically a reaction to the idea the person sneezing might not be long of this Earth.

After this conversation, I'm going to drop that phrase from my vocabulary, for the most part. I'll still do it if I'm around a group of people that will get offended otherwise. More importantly, I'm no longer going to be upset that I've said it to my husband our entire marriage, and he, for the most part, never says it to me.
